U.S. Route 66

U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.

Route 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.

Route 66 (song)

"Route 66" (originally recorded as "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66") is a popular rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. The song uses a twelve-bar blues arrangement and the lyrics follow the path of federal highway U.S. Route 66, which traversed the western two-thirds of the U.S. from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

Nat King Cole, as the King Cole Trio, first recorded the song the same year and it became a hit, appearing on Billboard magazine's R&B and pop charts. The song was subsequently recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, Them, Asleep at the Wheel, and Depeche Mode.

Composition and lyrics

The idea for the song came to Troup on a cross-country drive from Pennsylvania to California. Troup wanted to try his hand as a Hollywood songwriter, so he and his wife, Cynthia, packed up their 1941 Buick and headed west. The trip began on Highway 40 and continued along Route 66 to the California coast. Troup initially considered writing a tune about Highway 40, but Cynthia suggested the title "Get Your Kicks on Route 66." The song was composed on the ten-day journey, and completed by referencing maps when the couple arrived in Los Angeles.

Connecticut Route 66

Route 66 is a Connecticut state highway running from Meriden to Windham, serving as an alternate east–west route to US 6 through east-central Connecticut.

Route description

Route 66 begins in Meriden as the extension of I-691, which officially ends at its interchange with I-91. This freeway portion runs for about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) into the town of Middlefield. Route 66 then becomes a surface road and running 4 lanes wide in Middlefield, Middletown across but not intersecting the Route 9 freeway, and Portland, overlapping Route 17 from Middletown to Portland across the Connecticut River on the Arrigoni Bridge. It then narrows to 2 lanes in Portland as Route 17 turns off, and continues through East Hampton and Marlborough, where it intersects with the Route 2 freeway, and continues through Hebron, and Columbia. In Columbia, Route 66 intersects with US 6 at a freeway junction, after which it continues into Windham. In Columbia and Windham, Route 66 serves as an alternate non-freeway route through the Windham town center, where it briefly overlaps with Route 32, and Eastern Connecticut State University. Route 66 ends in Windham where at the end of the freeway segment of US 6, from which US 6 continues to the northeast.

Massachusetts Route 66

Route 66 is a west–east state highway in Massachusetts.

Route 66 begins at Route 112 in the Knightville section of Huntington. It passes over Norwich Hill into the town of Westhampton, crossing through the southern end of that town into Northampton. It passes through the southwestern part of that town, passing the former Northampton State Hospital and Smith College before ending in front of Smith College at Route 9, just yards west of where that route meets Route 10. For its entire length, Route 66 does not junction any other routes.
