Highland

The term highland or uplands is used to denote any mountainous region or elevated mountainous plateau. Generally speaking, upland (or uplands) tends to refer to ranges of hills, typically up to 500-600 m. Highland (or highlands) is usually reserved for ranges of low mountains.

Highlands worldwide

Probably the most known highlands in the anglophone world are the Scottish Highlands in the United Kingdom, the mountainous region north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. The Highland council area is a local government area in the Scottish Highlands and Britain's largest local government area.

Many countries have areas that are officially or unofficially referred to as highlands. Other than Scotland, these include parts Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Yemen, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Syria, Cantabria and Nova Scotia (the latter being Latin for 'New Scotland' due to its resemblance to the country).

Synonymous terms used in other countries include high country, used in New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Southern Queensland in Australia, and parts of the United States (notably Western North Carolina), and highveld, used in South Africa.

Highlands (TV series)

Highlands is a 6-part documentary series produced by STV Productions (then known as "SMG Productions") and broadcast on STV in Northern and Central Scotland and The History Channel (UK), presented by Taggart actor John Michie.

Highlands focused on the Highland Clearances of the late 18th & early 19th centuries and the political & religious events that led to the forced displacements and widespread evictions which diluted the culture of area and led to mass emigration to the Lowlands, the coast and abroad.

Locations featured in the series included Culloden, Glenfinnan, Urquhart Castle, Strathcarron and Durness. The Earl of Cromartie and author/historian Jim Hunter were amongst the featured local highlanders and historians featured.

Since its original broadcast, the series has since been aired on History (UK) and released on DVD.

Highlands, Edmonton

Highlands is a residential neighbourhood in north east Edmonton, Alberta, Canada overlooking the North Saskatchewan River valley. The area was annexed by Edmonton in 1912, and "was named in a contest offering a 50-dollar prize." In 2012, Highlands was ranked one of Canada's top ten neighbourhoods of old homes by the magazine This Old House.

The neighbourhood is bounded on the north by 118 (Alberta) Avenue, on the east by 50 Street, on the west by 67 Street, and on the south by the North Saskatchewan River valley. Interchanges between Wayne Gretzky Drive and both 118 Avenue and 112 Avenue give residents access to destinations south of the river including Whyte Avenue and the University of Alberta.

Residents enjoy good access to Edmonton Northlands, Rexall Place, the Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium and Concordia College. All four facilities are located a short distance west of the neighbourhood.

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Highlands had a population of 7003263100000000000♠2,631 living in 7003134600000000000♠1,346 dwellings, a 4.4% change from its 2009 population of 7003252000000000000♠2,520. With a land area of 1.15 km² (0.44 sq mi), it had a population density of 7003228780000000000♠2,287.8 people/km² in 2012.
