Highlander: The Series

Highlander: The Series is an American fantasy science fiction action-adventure television series featuring Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) of the Scottish Clan MacLeod, as the eponymous "Highlander". A slight retcon of the 1986 feature film of the same name, it features a storyline in which the protagonist of the film (Connor MacLeod, a member of a race of "Immortals") did not win "the Prize" sought by all Immortals, who still exist post-1985. Christopher Lambert reprised his role as Connor in the pilot episode, which introduced series protagonist Duncan MacLeod, an Immortal who was taken in by the same clan of Scottish Highlanders who had found and raised Connor generations before.

The series was an international hit and was nominated three times for the Gemini Awards and once for a Saturn Award in 1998.

History

In the pilot episode, the main character was established as Duncan MacLeod living quietly with his girlfriend Tessa Noël (played by Alexandra Vandernoot). They were co-proprietors of the antique shop MacLeod & Noël Antiques. The pilot introduced Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) as a thief who entered Duncan's shop and witnessed the confrontation between Duncan, evil Immortal Slan Quince (Richard Moll) and Duncan's fellow clansman Connor MacLeod, the hero from the movies.

Highlander: The Series (season 5)

The fifth season of the American drama/adventure television series Highlander began airing began airing 23 September 1996 and finished on 19 May 1997. The series continues to follow the adventures of Duncan MacLeod, a 400-year-old Immortal who can only die if he is beheaded. MacLeod is involved in the Game, an ongoing battle during which all Immortals have to behead each other until only one is left.

Production

Two episodes that aired during the fifth season were the fourth season episodes "Double Jeopardy" (aired April 28, 1997) and "One Minute to Midnight" (aired September 23, 1996). These episodes are included in the fourth season DVD set.

Highlander: The Series (season 6)

The sixth season (and final) of the French/Canadian drama/adventure television series Highlander began airing 5 October 1997 and finished on 16 May 1998. The series continues to follow the adventures of Duncan MacLeod, a 400-year-old Immortal who can only die if he is beheaded. MacLeod is involved in the Game, an ongoing battle during which all Immortals have to behead each other until only one is left.

Production

Although season five was meant to be the final season of the show, the show was renewed for a sixth season. Production began in July and ended in December. When funding finally was announced, Adrian Paul was working on Highlander: Endgame and said he’d only be available for half the season or eleven episodes. Peter Wingfield, Jim Byrnes, and Elizabeth Gracen were contracted to fill out the season. However, Peter and Elizabeth had other commitments that prevented them from being available for filming until November 1998. The series began filming in Paris in the summer and the producers had been approached about doing a spin-off series, which would center on a female immortal (who later became Highlander: The Raven). A number of “spec” scripts for the new series were filmed as episodes to fill out the season. But, funding was again cut and only thirteen episodes were filmed. Duncan does not appear at all in two of the episodes, Two of Hearts and Indiscretions (which does feature both Peter Wingfield and Jim Byrnes). "Indiscretions" was the last episode filmed for the series, but was shown before the finale two-parter, "To Be" and "Not To Be".
