The Rangers are a fictional superhero team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The team first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #265 (November 1981) and was created by writer Bill Mantlo and penciller Sal Buscema. The title page of The Incredible Hulk #265 also credits Mark Gruenwald with co-creation of The Rangers.

Team members usually hail from Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.

Publication history

In the story "You Get What You Need!" published in Incredible Hulk vol.1 #265 (November 1981), writer Bill Mantlo, penciller Sal Buscema, and Mark Gruenwald created the superhero team Rangers. The team consists of western characters Firebird, Shooting Star, Texas Twister, the Phantom Rider (Hamilton Slade, then called Night Rider), and the contemporary Red Wolf.

The members of the team have been identified in the 142 registered superheroes who appear on the cover of the comic book Avengers: The Initiative #1 (June 2007).

Fictional team biography

The Rangers began by accident. Rick Jones was being held captive by the villainous Corruptor, who had the Hulk under his influence. Rick sent a shortwave radio message to attempt to contact the Avengers. The message never reached the Avengers, but instead five individuals intercepted the message and responded: Shooting Star and Texas Twister, Firebird, the Phantom Rider (Hamilton Slade, then called Night Rider), and the contemporary Red Wolf.

United States Army Rangers

The United States Army Rangers are an elite military formation of the United States Army, that serve in designated U.S. Army Ranger units or are graduates from the U.S. Army Ranger School. The term ranger has been in use unofficially in a military context since the early 17th century. The first military company officially commissioned as rangers were English soldiers fighting in King Philip's War (1676) and from there the term came into common official use in the French and Indian Wars. There have been American military companies officially called Rangers since the American Revolution.

The 75th Ranger Regiment is an elite airborne light infantry combat formation within the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC). The six battalions of the modern Rangers have been deployed in wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and saw action in several conflicts, such as those in Panama and Grenada. The Ranger Regiment traces its lineage to three of six battalions raised in World War II, and to the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional)—known as "Merrill's Marauders", and then reflagged as the 475th Infantry, then later as the 75th Infantry.

Highland (MBTA station)

Highland is a MBTA commuter rail station in West Roxbury, Massachusetts serving the Needham Line. The station is fully wheelchair accessible, with a 1-car-length "mini-high" high level platform.

Highland (Irish)

A highland is an Irish musical form in duple meter, largely idiomatic of Donegal. Like the fling, it is related to the Scottish highland fling and the hornpipe, found throughout the British Isles. Like its Scottish cousin, a fling is played in cut time and has a dotted rhythm. Like the Scottish strathspey, quarter notes may sometimes be articulated as triplets or Scots snaps. However, unlike the strathspey, these Scots snaps are usually less sharply articulated. They are also played more slowly than reels and are strongly accented on the first beat, which tends to be a note quarter note in length. A typical fling has a 32-bar form divided into two parts, each consisting of eight bars which are repeated: AABB.

Highland is a song performed by Swedish group One More Time. The song was written by Nanne Grönvall and Peter Grönvall, and released as a single in 1992. The song became one of the group's most international successes, ending up in second position at the Swedish singles chart. The song is also on the group's 1992 studio album Highland.
