Heves County

Heves county lies in northern Hungary. It lies between the right bank of the river Tisza and the Mátra and Bükk mountains. It shares borders with the Hungarian counties Pest, Nógrád, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. Eger is the county seat.

Geography

Heves county is a geographically diverse area; its northern part is mountainous (the Mátra and Bükk are the two highest mountain ranges in Hungary), while at south it includes a part of the Great Hungarian Plain. From south it is bordered by Lake Tisza, the largest artificial lake in Hungary. The average temperature is between 8 and 10 °C (higher on the southern parts of the county).

Heves County (former)

Heves was an administrative county in the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory, which is now in northern Hungary, was slightly larger than that of present Heves county. The capital of the county was Eger.

Geography

Heves county shared borders with the Hungarian counties Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun, Nógrád, Gömör-Kishont, Borsod, Hajdú and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. It stretched from the Mátra and Bükk mountains to and across the river Tisza. Its area was 3761 km² around 1910.

History

Heves county was formed in the 13th century. It was ruled by the Turks between 1596-1687. After World War II, the territory of the county was modified: the region around Pásztó is now in Nógrád county, the area on the left bank of the Tisza (Tiszafüred) is now in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, and an area north of Eger was taken from Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county.

Heves

Heves is a small city in eastern Hungary. About 100 km east of Budapest, Heves lies at the northern extreme of the Great Hungarian Plain (Nagyalfold), just south of the Mátra and Bükk hills and west of the Tisza River. Heves shares its name with a Hungarian county (megye). The city is the fourth largest city in Heves county. The closest major city is Eger, which lies 40 km to the north. Heves is a significant transportation hub for the towns and agricultural areas of southern Heves county.

Heves is home to approximately 11,000 residents. In addition to the ethnic Hungarian majority, there is a sizable Roma population. The city welcomes an outdoor market every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Heves is well known for watermelons and hosts a watermelon festival each August.

The center of the city is a scenic park with a chestnut-lined promenade, a gazebo, a fountain and numerous statues. A city museum and a 19th-century Catholic church stand at opposite ends of the park. A second museum (sakkmuzeum), one of the few chess museums in the world, is located not far from the park. Other recreational opportunities in Heves include a thermal bath, a community center that doubles as a theatre (kulturhaz) and the Aranykehely restaurant. The small city is also home to a number of small bars and nightclubs, including Unikum and Panziodisco.
