Barry Manilow (born Barry Alan Pincus; June 17, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter and producer. He is best known for such recordings as "Mandy", "Can't Smile Without You", and "Copacabana (At the Copa)".
In 1978, five of his albums were on the best-seller charts simultaneously, a feat equalled only by Herb Alpert, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and Johnny Mathis. He has recorded a string of Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums that have resulted in him being named Radio & Records' No. 1 adult contemporary artist, and winning three straight American Music Awards for favorite pop/rock male artist. Between 1974 and 1983 Manilow had three No. 1 singles and 25 that reached the top 40. Although not a favorite of music critics, Manilow has been praised by several well-known entertainers, including Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s saying, "He's next." In 1988, Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, "Don't stop what you're doing, man. We're all inspired by you."

Barry Manilow is the sixth self-titled album released by singer and songwriter Barry Manilow. Manilow released a total of six self-titled albums in his career: Barry Manilow (later re-released as Barry Manilow I), Barry Manilow II, Barry, Manilow, and this album with the same title as his first. The album was released in 1989, and reached Gold certification. This album also represented a hint of future album releases...95% of the songs were not written/co-written by Manilow, which had up until that point been rare. Manilow, known for being a composer, typically always stocked his albums with material he co-wrote with his celebrated lyricists. After the release of this album, the 1990s dawned and a new era in his career began as he embarked on introducing contemporary audiences to pop music of the 1930s through the late 1940s. This album is also one of his longest of original material, clocking in at nearly an hour. There are few up-tempo songs, favoring ballads of which he is known to perform.
"Here Comes the Night" is a 1964 song, written by Bert Berns. It became a hit for Northern Irish band Them, fronted by Van Morrison, in March 1965, charting at No. 2 in the UK and No. 24 in the U.S. Them's single is listed at either No.33 or No.36 in the Top 100 best-selling UK singles during the calendar year 1965, depending on source.
The song was originally released as a single in both the UK and the U.S. by another Decca Records' artiste, Lulu, in November 1964. Lulu's recording charted at No.50 in the UK, and failed to chart at all in the U.S.
Them's version of the song was the second Them track produced by Bert Berns and the first occasion that Them recorded one of his compositions. It was recorded in a session at Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London in October 1964 along with "Baby, Please Don't Go" and "All For Myself".
Jimmy Page played guitar on this arrangement. Andy White and Tommy Scott performed backing vocals with Phil Coulter on keyboards. Drummer Ronnie Millings recalled that the band worked on the song at the studio with rehearsals lasting four days. Billy Harrison noted that "I remember sitting in Decca when Bert said he had this song, and he came out with "Here Comes the Night". He had a riff and that's all he had, and we sat and we worked on it, and we came up with what you hear. We worked at it sitting in the studio—but no engineers or anything." Phil Coulter later said, "I knew I'd heard a smash. It was the first time I'd ever heard a hit record in its emerging state."
"Here Comes the Night" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It was originally released on their 1967 album, Wild Honey. In 1979, the song was re-recorded and released on their 1979 album, L.A. (Light Album), as a disco song lasting nearly eleven minutes.
Author Andrew Hickey noted: "This is a rather by-the-numbers song which however manages the interesting trick of having the chorus apparently lose its tonal centre altogether – normally one would have a harmonically simple chorus while the verses are complex, but this has simple verses in C but a chorus whose chords are Cmin, Ab7 and F, which are chords that just should not go together."
The 1979 disco version of the song, produced by Bruce Johnston is over eight minutes longer than the original song. There are four edits of this disco version. The first edit appears on the L.A. (Light Album), while the second edit was released on a 12" single release (Caribou/Brother/CBS 2Z8-9028). The third edit was the B-side of the 12" single, which is a slightly shorter instrumental (backing track) version of the song. The fourth and final version of the song is found on the 7" single release (Caribou/Brother/CBS ZS8 9026). Despite the dominance of disco music at the time of song's release, this version of "Here Comes the Night" peaked at #48 on the Disco Top 80 chart.
