Hell Below Zero (1954) is a murder mystery film, starring Alan Ladd in the second of his films for Warwick Films.

The film was directed by Mark Robson, and was written by Alec Coppel and Max Trell. The film was produced in color, based on the novel The White South by Hammond Innes, and presents interesting footage of whaling fleets in action.[1]

Plot [link]

The plot revolves around the death of Captain Nordahl, on a factory ship in Antarctic waters, lost overboard in mysterious circumstances. Captain Nordahl is an associate in a Norwegian whaling company, Bland-Nordahl.

Duncan Craig, an American, played by Ladd, meets Judie Nordahl, the captain's daughter on his way to South Africa where he gets even with a business partner who cheated him. With little money left and a desire to see Judie again, Craig signs on to be a mate on the ship taking Judie to Antarctica.

On arrival in Antarctic waters, Craig finds suspicious evidence that seems to implicate Erik Bland (Stanley Baker), the new captain of the factory ship, in a conspiracy. Another murder follows and the film concludes with a dramatic showdown on the ice.

Nine Below Zero

Nine Below Zero are an English blues band, who have a cult following throughout Europe, and were most popular during the period 1980–1982.

Career

The band was originally formed in South London in 1977, by guitarist and lead vocalist Dennis Greaves. Taking bassist Peter Clark with him, they recruited Kenny Bradley on drums, and vocalist and harmonica player Mark Feltham. They originally called themselves 'Stan's Blues Band', and for two years built up a local following in London clubs.

In 1979, while playing at The Thomas A'Beckett pub in the Old Kent Road they accepted an offer from former musician Mickey Modern to manage them, and it was he who persuaded them to change the band's name to something sharper. Greaves chose Nine Below Zero after the Sonny Boy Williamson II penned song. At that time Modern was a musician signed to A&M Records, after producing the band's demos he persuaded A&M to give him a record label with which to launch this band's career. Modern named the label M&L Records.

When the commander of the United States Navy submarine AL-14 is wounded on its last cruise, Lieutenant Thomas Knowlton (Robert Montgomery), the second in command, hopes to be promoted and take his place. However, Lieutenant Commander T. J. Toler (Walter Huston) shows up and takes over.

Toler orders his officers to attend a ball. The young men dread having to dance with the wives of admirals, but Knowlton and his close friend and shipmate, Lieutenant Ed "Brick" Walters (Robert Young), are pleasantly surprised to discover the beautiful Joan Standish (Madge Evans) among the attendees. When an enemy air raid forces everyone to take shelter, Knowlton takes Joan to his apartment. Though she insists on leaving, he can tell she is attracted to him. However, before anything can happen, Toler shows up to collect his daughter.

Yo yo this something that uh,
    Old bottle Old whine,
An often gold type shit... you know what I'm saying
I ain't gonna take this opportunity
    To assassinate this character,
Cuz I still care for you,
But I ain't gonna stay at this table just staring at you
    (Jazz)
Baby since I can't give nothing to eat,
Can you feed me with the knowledge
Of how I treat you so bad, and I make you so sad,
We can start at the table chopping the beef,
Then we can get to the meat and potatoes,
Of how we're gonna last, how we're gonna laugh,
I ain't questioning your gangster girl,
But we ain't living in a gangster world,
So all the stone stands in your heart of ice,
Can I get the stab once girl and change your life,
    Chorus
    You're below Zero,
You're the proudest girl I've ever known,
Like a queen who took the throne,
    You're below zero,
And you stay on a bag of ice,
When I stay treating you right girl,
    You're below zero,
I wish that I could warm you up, but my energy got caught,
You're so cold, you're so cold you're so cold
    Baby girl you're so called
You're as cold as ice, and after all the sacrifice
I showered you with love and you froze it over,
Now I'm fast slipping' fall that I can't get over, girl
Icicles formed on your shoulders girl
Stabbed me right in the arm when I get closer girl,
Lady you're a nice queen throw and get rid it,
I ain't trying to get caught unless pleasing
I ain't questioning your gangster girl,
But we ain't living in a gangster world,
So all those stone stands in your heart of ice
Can I get the stab once girl and change your life,
    Chorus
    You're below Zero,
You're the prudest girl I've ever known,
Like a queen who took the throne,
    You're below zero,
And you stay on a bag of ice,
When I keep treating you right girl,
    You're below zero,
