Headbutt

A headbutt is a targeted strike with the head, typically (when intentional) involving the use of robust parts of the headbutter's cranium as the area of impact. The most effective headbutts strike the most sensitive areas of an opponent, such as the nose, utilising the stronger bones in the forehead (frontal bone) or the back of the skull (occipital or parietal bone). It can be considered a quick, very effective but risky maneuver, as a misplaced strike can cause greater injury to the person delivering the headbutt than to the person receiving it. A headbutt does not have to be against another person's head, although this is usually the nearest and easiest target. Another notable version of the headbutt, the head-to-chestbutt, was notoriously used by Zinadine Zidane during the 2006 World Cup.

In the United Kingdom, a headbutt is sometimes referred to as a Glasgow kiss. This is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the city of Glasgow's violent reputation.

Etymology

From French botter = "to kick". Rams are well known for butting with their heads and horns. From this the terms battering ram and hydraulic ram are derived. Many males in various animal species employ butting during courtship.

Headbutt (sculpture)

Headbutt (French: Coup de tête) is a sculpture by the French artist Adel Abdessemed. It is 5 m (16.4 ft) tall and made from bronze. It was unveiled on 26 September 2012 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France.

Background

The sculpture depicts an incident that took place in the 110th minute of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Italy, when Zinedine Zidane headbutted Italian defender Marco Materazzi in the chest, after he had verbally abused his sister. Zidane consequently received a red card and was sent off. France lost the match, which was Zidane's final match as a professional footballer.

As France subsequently lost the match, exhibition organiser Alain Michaud has described it as "...against the tradition of making statues in honour of certain victories. It is an ode to defeat".

In November 2012, Materazzi posed for a photo in front of the statue, and uploaded it to Twitter with the post "I Love Haters".

Headbutt (song)

"Headbutt" is the first single from The King Blues' third album Punk and Poetry. It was released on iTunes on 16 May 2010. The band appeared in Kerrang! magazine shortly before its release to promote the single. The single is the first since founding member of the band 'Fruitbag' left and the first released on new label Transmission Recordings. Already the song has become a hit with fans due to the band playing it live frequently during their tour during March, April and May 2010. It reached #72 in the Official UK top 100 singles chart and #1 in the Independent Singles Breaker Chart.
