Haʻapai

Haʻapai is a group of islands, islets, reefs and shoals with an area of 109.30 square kilometres (42.20 sq mi) in the central part of the Kingdom of Tonga, with the Tongatapu group to the south and the Vavaʻu group to the north. Seventeen of the Haʻapai islands are populated with altogether 6,616 people. Its highest point is Kao at almost 1,050 metres (3,440 ft).

Pangai is the administrative capital village of the Haʻapai Group and is located on Lifuka.

Geography

Haʻapai consists of 51 islands directly west of the Tonga Trench, constituting a chain of volcanic islands including Kao, the highest point in the kingdom standing at 1,046 metres (3,432 ft). Further to the west are the coral islands which are inhabited. The archipelago lies 204 kilometres (127 mi) north of Tongatapu and 130 kilometres (81 mi) south of Vavaʻu. Seventeen of the islands are inhabited, including the main islands of Lifuka and Foa. The two main villages in the archipelago are Pangai on Lifuka (where Salote Pilolevu Airport is located) and Ha'ano. A total of 7570 people live on the Ha'apai islands (Census 2006).

Haʻapai 13

Haʻapai 13 is an electoral constituency for the Legislative Assembly in the Kingdom of Tonga. It was established for the November 2010 general election, when the multi-seat regional constituencies for People's Representatives were replaced by single-seat constituencies, electing one representative via the first past the post electoral system. Located in the Haʻapai island group, it encompasses the villages of Nomuka, Mango, Fonoifua, Haʻafeva, Kotu, Tungua, Tofua, Fotuhaʻa, Matuku, ʻOʻua, Fakakai, Pukotala, Ha'ano, Muitoa, Moʻungaʻone, Fotua, Fangaleʻounga, Lotofoa, Faleloa, Haʻateihosiʻi, and Haʻafakahenga. It is one of two constituencies in Haʻapai, the other being Haʻapai 12. (The number does not mean that it is the thirteenth in Haʻapai, but in the country.)

Its first ever (and so far only) representative is 'Uliti Uata, of the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands. Pulu was first elected to the Assembly in 1975, then left politics in 1980, and returned to the Assembly in 1993, being re-elected continuously from that point on. In 2010, he thus began his eighth term as MP, in this new constituency. He was elected with an overwhelming majority, appearing to make this, at present, a safe seat for the party. In January 2011, he was appointed Minister for Health.

Haʻapai 12

Haʻapai 12 is an electoral constituency for the Legislative Assembly in the Kingdom of Tonga. It was established for the November 2010 general election, when the multi-seat regional constituencies for People's Representatives were replaced by single-seat constituencies, electing one representative via the first past the post electoral system. Located in the Haʻapai island group, it encompasses the villages of Pangai, Hihifo, Ha‘ato‘u, Navea, Holopeka, Koulo, ‘Uiha, Felemea, and Lofanga. It is one of two constituencies in Haʻapai, the other being Haʻapai 13. (The number does not mean that it is the twelfth in Haʻapai, but in the country.)

Its first ever (and so far only) representative is Moʻale Finau, a first time MP, of the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands.

Apai

Apai is one of four small villages on Manono Island in Samoa. The village population is 111 (2006 Census).

The other villages on Manono island are Lepuia'i, Faleu and Salua.

All the settlements on Manono Island fall within the political district of Aiga-i-le-Tai.

Manono island is one of three isles in the Apolima Strait separating the country's two main islands Upolu and Savai'i. The other islands in the strait are Apolima and the tiny uninhabited islet of Nu'ulopa.
