Hastings Senior High School (Nebraska)

Hastings High School is a public secondary school located in Hastings, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Hastings Public Schools school district. Other Hastings-area high schools are Hastings St. Cecilia High School and Adams Central Junior-Senior High School. HHS is the largest of the three.

Hastings High School (Florida)

The Hastings High School is a historic public high school building in the St. Johns County School District. It is located at 6195 South Main Street in Hastings, Florida, in southwest St. Johns County, Florida. The building no longer operates as a school, and currently serves as a library.

History

Construction of a new school, designed by Fred A. Henderich, began in May 1924. The two-story coquina building had a roof of Spanish tile and included 12 classrooms, laboratories, administrative offices, a cafeteria and an auditorium with seating for 650. Lighting was electric and heat was provided with hot water radiators.

The Hastings Branch of the St. Johns County Public Library is located in this building.

On June 14, 2006, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Hastings High School (Michigan)

Hastings High School is a public secondary school in Hastings, Michigan, United States, serving students in grades 9–12. The school is part of the Hastings Area School System, which includes one junior high school and four elementary schools. The mascot, the Saxons, is inexplicably named after the losing side of the battle of Hastings.

History

In 1877, the first graduating class of Hastings High School included only five students.

New building

From 1917 to 1970, Hastings High School students attended classes at 232 W Grand Street. That address is now home to Hastings Middle School. Students began attending classes in the new building at 520 W South Street on September 3, 1970. "At the time of its opening, funds were approved to put all academic classrooms on a twenty-five to one pupil/teacher ratio," a major educational accomplishment achieved by few Michigan districts at that time. The school contains one hundred thirty-two rooms including a gymnasium, library, cafeteria, and lecture hall.

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."

Hastings (UK Parliament constituency)

Hastings was a parliamentary constituency in Sussex. It returned two Members of Parliament to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom until the 1885 general election, when its representation was reduced to one member. It was abolished for the 1983 general election, when it was partially replaced by the new Hastings and Rye constituency.
