Harry Tate

Ronald Macdonald Hutchinson (4 July 1872 - 14 February 1940), professionally known as Harry Tate, was an English comedian who performed both in the music halls and in films. Tate worked for Henry Tate & Sons, Sugar Refiners before going on the stage, and took his stage name from them.

Career

Tate made his debut at the Oxford Music Hall in 1895, and became well known for his impressions of performers such as Dan Leno, George Robey, and Eugene Stratton. Success came with his comedy sketch, Motoring, in which he played the part of a new car owner trying to repair it. His other sketches included Running an Office, Billiards and Fishing. Several catch phrases he used became popular in Britain in the twentieth century, including "Goodbye-eee", "How's your Father" (used as an escape clause when he was unable to answer a question) and "I don't think", used sarcastically (as in "He's a nice chap – I don't think"). He used his bristling moustache to express all kinds of emotion by twitching or moving it.

Harry Tate (footballer)

Harry F. Tate (July 31, 1886 – October 27, 1954) was an American amateur football (soccer) player who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics.

He was born and died in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1904 he was a member of the St. Rose Parish team, which won the bronze medal in the football tournament. He played all four matches as a forward.

Harry Tate (cricketer)

Harry George Tate (18 July 1862 – 9 March 1949) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset in 1882. He was born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, and died at Bishop's Hull, Taunton, Somerset.

Tate played as an upper-order batsman in Somerset's very first first-class cricket match, the game against Lancashire at Old Trafford in June 1882. He failed to score in either innings as Somerset were bowled out for 29 and 51 to lose the match by an innings and 157 runs. He did not play for Somerset again.

Tate

The Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British art, and international modern and contemporary art. It is a network of four art museums: Tate Britain, London (until 2000 known as the Tate Gallery, founded 1897), Tate Liverpool (founded 1988), Tate St Ives, Cornwall (founded 1993) and Tate Modern, London (founded 2000), with a complementary website, Tate Online (created 1998). Tate is not a government institution, but its main sponsor is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Tate is used as the operating name for the corporate body, which was established by the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 as The Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery.

The gallery was founded in 1897, as the National Gallery of British Art. When its role was changed to include the national collection of modern art as well as the national collection of British art, in 1932, it was renamed the Tate Gallery after sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate & Lyle, who had laid the foundations for the collection. The Tate Gallery was housed in the current building occupied by Tate Britain, which is situated in Millbank, London. Tate (spirit)

Tȟaté /tɑːˈteɪ/ is a wind god or Spirit in Lakota mythology. There are four primary wind spirits, referenced in relation to the four directions. It is thought that the wind unites "all" in one spirit, and that eagles, who stand on the wind, are the carrier of vision. Tate is said to guide one through obstacles.

George Henry Hamilton Tate

George Henry Hamilton Tate (April 30, 1894 - December 24, 1953) was an English-born American zoologist and botanist, who worked as a mammalogist for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In his lifetime he wrote several books on subjects such as the South American mouse opossums and the mammals of the Pacific and East Asia.

Biography

He was born in London on April 30, 1894. He had a bother, Geoffrey Tate.

In 1912 he migrated from England to New York City with his family. From 1912 to 1914 he worked as telegraph operator on Long Island. He then joined the British Army to fight in World War I. At the end of the war, he studied at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England without taking a degree. He then migrated back to the United States and became a field assistant in mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. In 1927 he completed his B.S. at Columbia University in Manhattan, and became a United States citizen.

In September 1927, sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, he went to look for Paul Redfern, the missing aviator.
