Harry Tally

Harry Lee Tally (June 30, 1866 – August 16, 1939) was an American tenor singer of popular songs, who recorded between 1902 and 1917.

Biography

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began performing in a popular vaudeville act, the Empire City Quartet. Described as "a sweet-voiced tenor", he first recorded as a solo singer in late 1902, and thereafter recorded prolifically for several labels, particularly Columbia, Victor, and Edison. He recorded a wide variety of material, from sentimental to comic.

Among his most commercially successful songs were "Seminole" (first recorded in 1903), "Wait 'Till the Sun Shines, Nellie" (1906) – which he may have been the first to record– and "Take Me Back To New York Town" (1907). Several of his songs were inspired by new technological innovations, including "On An Automobile Afternoon" (1906), "Let's Go Into A Picture Show" (1909) — apparently the first song to mention this new form of entertainment — and "Come, Josephine, In My Flying Machine" (1911). Tally also recorded duets, in the Edison Diamond Discs series, with another member of the Empire City Quartet, Harry Mayo, which have been described as "finely tuned performances combining expert harmonization with hilariously unrelated nonchalant banter." He also wrote songs with Harry Mayo, including "That's a Mother's Liberty Loan".

Tally (cap)

The tally on a sailor's cap is a ribbon usually bearing the name of a ship or some other establishment to which he belongs.

Practice varies with each navy, though a conventional tally is black, with a gold or yellow inscription. The inscription may be simply a ship's name (e.g. "H.M.A.S. ARRERNTE"), the name of the navy ("MARINE NATIONALE") or a longer name such as "Red Banner Baltic Fleet" ("КРАСНОЗНАМЕН. БАЛТ. ФЛОТ"). During World War II the ship's name would often be omitted from the tally (leaving just "H.M.A.S", for example) as a precautionary measure against espionage.

Likewise the manner a tally is fastened onto the cap varies with each navy. For example, the British tie it into a bow on the left side; the Germans and Russians tie it at the back, leaving behind a pair of streamers; while the French stitch it onto the cap like an ordinary cap band.

Occasionally the tally's colour may vary from the usual black (such as the Ribbon of Saint George tallies used in the Soviet and Russian navies to denote Guards units).

Tally was a leading American manufacturer of printers.

Founded in 1949 in Kent, Washington, United States by Philip Renshaw, the company was a leading manufacturer of punch tape readers. In 1970 Tally developed line matrix printer technologies and became a leader in the printer industry.

In 1972 Mannesmann Präzisiontechnik was founded as a subsidiary of Mannesmann AG, specialising in dot matrix printers. In 1979 Tally and Mannesmann Präzisiontechnik were merged to form Mannesmann Tally, part of the Mannesmann Kienzle computer group. Mannesmann Tally offered printing solutions in all major technologies into all key markets, along with service and support.

Printers providing APL characters were produced in cooperation with I. P. Sharp Associates in order to support their international timesharing network. The flexible, though challenging, method of pin-firing allowed the full APL set of characters to be printed as well as an enhanced set of more universal (worldwide) glyphs. James C. Field created the dot-matrix images with the help of a software trick invented by L. M. Breed (q.v).

Harry (newspaper)

Harry was an underground newspaper founded and edited by Michael Carliner and Tom D'Antoni and published biweekly in Baltimore, Maryland from 1969 to 1972. A total of at least 41 issues were published, with an average circulation of 6,000 to 8,000 copies. P. J. O'Rourke, then a student at Johns Hopkins University, was a regular contributor and one of its editors. The publication was arbitrarily named by a neighbor's 2-year-old son, who was reportedly calling everything "Harry" at the time.

The newspaper published in a 20 page black and white tabloid format, with news in front, followed by cultural features and a community calendar. Harry's slogan, just below its flag, declared its mission: "Serving the Baltimore Underground Community". Many of the staff lived in a Baltimore row house commune called "Harry." There was also an annex called "Harry's Aunt" down the block.

Twenty years after the newspaper stopped publishing, Publisher Thomas V. D'Antoni tried to restart Harry as a monthly publication in 1991. His first issue was expected to be 32 pages long, with eight pages of reprints from the original Harry, including some of O'Rourke's articles.

Harry (TV series)

Harry is a television drama series that was made by Union Pictures for the BBC, and shown on BBC One between 1993 and 1995. The programme concerned a journalist called Harry Salter (played by Michael Elphick) who ran a news agency in the English town of Darlington in England.
