Harry Clarke

Harry Clarke (17 March 1889 – 6 January 1931) was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator. Born in Dublin, he was a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement.

Early life

Henry Patrick (Harry) Clarke was born 17 March 1889, younger son and third child of Joshua and Brigid Clarke (née MacGonigal). Church decorator Joshua Clarke moved to Dublin from Leeds in 1877 and started a decorating business Joshua Clarke & Sons, which later incorporated a stained glass division. Through his work with his father, Clarke was exposed to many schools of art but Art Nouveau in particular.

Clarke was schooled at Model Schools, Marlborough St. and subsequently Belvedere College, although he left that college in 1905 following the death of his mother in 1903. Clarke was then apprenticed into his father's studio, whilst also attending evening classes in the Dublin Art School. It was during this time that his The Consecration of St Mel, Bishop of Longford, by St Patrick won the gold medal for stained glass work in the 1910 Board of Education National Competition.

Harry Clarke (Australian footballer, born 1885)

Harry Clarke (6 October 1885 – 15 April 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

Harry Gladstone Clarke

Harry Gladstone Clarke (1 June 1881 – 8 April 1956) was a Canadian parliamentarian and insurance agent.

Clarke was an alderman on Toronto City Council for Ward 2, when he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1935 federal election as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Rosedale. He was defeated in the summer of 1939 in his attempt to win the nomination as a National Conservative candidate in the 1940 federal election by Harry Jackman. After he and his supporters unsuccessfully tried to obtain an "open convention" in Rosedale in early 1940 to recontest the nomination, he retired from politics. He died en route to Florida at Pennsylvania in 1956. He was interred at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Harry Clarke (American football)

Harry Charles Clarke (December 1, 1916 — December 30, 2005) was a professional American football halfback for four seasons for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League. He later played three seasons in the All-America Football Conference. He played college football for West Virginia Mountaineers.

College career

Harry Clarke set many records while playing for West Virginia University. He still holds some to this day. While at WVU Clarke rushed for 921 yards, which was a team record at the time, in the 1938 season. He was inducted into the university's hall of fame in 1977.

Professional career

During his rookie season with the Chicago Bears, Clarke scored two touchdowns in the 1940 NFL Championship game to help defeat the Washington Redskins 73 to 0 . After his fourth season with the Bears, Clarke was drafted into the Navy in 1943. After his time in the Navy, Clarke played in the All-American Football Conference from 1946-1948 for Los Angeles Dons then returned to Chicago to play for the Rockets. According to some statistics Clarke played for both the Dons and the Rockets in the 1948 season: 5 games for each team.

Harry Clarke (footballer, born 1923)

Harry Clarke (23 February 1923 – 16 April 2000) was a professional footballer who spent his entire senior career at Tottenham Hotspur. He also represented England on one occasion.

Football career

Clarke joined Spurs in March 1949 from Lovells Athletic. He played a total of 322 matches at centre half and netting four goals in all competitions between 1949–56. A cornerstone of the push and run side of the early 1950s when he featured in all 42 matches of the Championship winning side of 1950–51. After retiring from competitive football, Clarke joined the club's coaching staff.

Clarke made his only appearance for England on 4 April 1954, against Scotland at Hampden Park in the 1953–54 British Home Championship. The match also served as a 1954 FIFA World Cup qualification tie.

Harry Corson Clarke (1861–1923) was a Major League Baseball player. He played in 1 game for the 1889 Washington Nationals of the National League on August 28, 1889. He played right field and failed to get a hit in three at-bats.
