Harry Brown (film)

Harry Brown is a 2009 British vigilante thriller film directed by Daniel Barber and starring Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Jack O'Connell, and Liam Cunningham. The story follows Harry Brown, a widowed Royal Marines veteran, who had served in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, living on a London housing estate that is rapidly descending into youth crime; Harry fights fire with fire after a friend is murdered.

The film also features actor and rapper Plan B who, with Chase & Status, is also responsible for the film's theme music track "End Credits."Harry Brown had its World Premiere as a "Special Presentation" at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and was released theatrically in the United Kingdom by Lionsgate UK on 11 November 2009; the film was released in the United States by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Destination Films on 30 April 2010. The film was mainly filmed on and around the mostly abandoned Heygate Estate in Walworth, London; which was due to be demolished in late 2010. The subway filming was at Marks Gate, East London.

Henry Summers "Harry" Brown (18 September 1907 – 1963) was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside forward for various clubs in the 1930s, including Hibernian, Darlington, Chesterfield, Plymouth Argyle and Reading. At Chesterfield, he was a member of the team that won the Football League Third Division North championship in 1935–36.

Sir Harry Percy Brown CMG (28 December 1878 – 5 June 1967) was a senior Australia public servant. He was Director-General of the Postmaster-General's Department from 1923 until 1939.

Life and career

Harry Brown was born in Hylton, Durham, England on 28 December 1878 to Sarah Emma and George Brown.

He was appointed Director-General of Posts and Telegraphs, heading the Postmaster-General's Department, in December 1923. His salary on appointment was significantly more than that of any other person in the Commonwealth Public Service.

On 5 June 1967, Brown died in Sydney.

Awards

Brown was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1934, and was knighted in 1938.
