London Broncos

London Broncos are a professional rugby league football club based in Ealing, London who compete in the Kingstone Press Championship, the second tier of professional rugby league football.

The club competed in the Super League competition since its introduction in 1996 until the end of the 2014 season. The current head coach is Andrew Henderson, assisted by England and Great Britain internationals Jamie Langley and Danny Ward.

The Broncos are captained by Wes Naiqama and play at the Trailfinders Sports Ground in Ealing, sharing with the rugby union side Ealing Trailfinders.

The club was originally formed as Fulham in 1980, entering the Rugby Football League Championship's second division for the 1980–81 Rugby Football League season. Over the years the club has changed names a number of times and has also been known as London Crusaders (1991–1994), London Broncos (1994–2005 and since 2012) and as Harlequins Rugby League (2006–2011).

Whilst the club has never won a major trophy, they were finalists in the 1999 Challenge Cup Final and finished the 1997 Super League season in second place. The only trophy the club has won since its formation in 1980 is the Rugby Football League Championship Second Division in 1982-83.

2009 Harlequins Rugby League season

Harlequins Rugby League – the only team in the Super League based in a capital city – will be competing in the 2009 Challenge Cup as well as their fourteenth Super League season.

In 2009 Harlequins attracted an average home crowd of just under 3,500.

Rugby league

Rugby league football, usually called rugby league, or simply league, is a full contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field. One of the two codes of rugby football, it originated in England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of payments to players. Its rules gradually changed with the purpose of producing a faster, more entertaining game for spectators. It has been cited as the toughest, most physically demanding of team sports.

In rugby league, points are scored by carrying the ball and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing team's goal line; this is called a try, and is the primary method of scoring. The opposing team attempts to stop the attacking side scoring points by tackling the player carrying the ball. In addition to tries, points can be scored by kicking goals. After each try, the scoring team gains a free kick to try at goal with a conversion for further points. Kicks at goal may also be awarded for penalties, and field goals can be attempted at any time.

Rugby League 2 is a sports game of Rugby League. It is a sequel to the 2002 Rugby League, and was released on 9 December 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows, and in June 2006 for Xbox.

The title was developed by New Zealand company Sidhe and published in Australasia by Tru Blu Entertainment and in Europe by Alternative Software. New Zealand Warriors captain Steve Price is featured on the cover. The United Kingdom release features former St Helens captain Paul Sculthorpe on the cover.

Harlequin F.C.

The Harlequin Football Club (Harlequins or Quins for short) are an English rugby union team who play in the top level of English rugby, the English Premiership. Their ground in London is the Twickenham Stoop. They were one of the founder members of the RFU.

Quins were crowned winners of the European Challenge Cup in 2011, the English Premiership for the first time, in 2012 and won the LV= Cup in 2013.

The current club captain is Danny Care and the Director of Rugby, until the end of the 2015 / 16 season, is Conor O'Shea.

For sponsorship reasons they were formerly known as NEC Harlequins, but principal sponsorship is currently held by DHL, Adidas and IG.

History

Formation and early years

The Hampstead Football Club was founded in 1866 and the first recorded game took place in 1867. The club was renamed Harlequin Rugby Football Club in 1870, supposedly because the membership was no longer purely local but the HFC monogram had to be retained. The word 'Harlequin' was found in a dictionary and all present agreed to the new name. This caused a split in the membership and the half that did not form the Harlequins went off and formed the club now known as the Wasps.
