Hard bop

Hard bop is a subgenre of jazz that is an extension of bebop (or "bop") music. Journalists and record companies began using the term in the mid-1950s to describe a new current within jazz which incorporated influences from rhythm and blues, gospel music, and blues, especially in saxophone and piano playing.

David H. Rosenthal contends in his book Hard Bop that the genre is, to a large degree, the natural creation of a generation of African-American musicians who grew up at a time when bop and rhythm and blues were the dominant forms of black American music. Prominent hard bop musicians included Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Tadd Dameron.

Hard bop is sometimes referred to as "funky hard bop." The "funky" label refers to the rollicking, rhythmic feeling associated with the style. The descriptor is also used to describe soul jazz, which is commonly associated with hard bop. According to Mark C. Gridley, soul jazz more specifically refers to music with "an earthy, bluesy melodic concept and... repetitive, dance-like rhythms.... Note that some listeners make no distinction between 'soul-jazz' and 'funky hard bop,' and many musicians don't consider 'soul-jazz' to be continuous with 'hard bop.'" The term "soul" suggests the church, and traditional gospel music elements such as "amen chords" (the plagal cadence) and triadic harmonies seemed to suddenly appear in jazz during the era.

    Bop (song)

"Bop" is a song written by Paul Davis and Jennifer Kimball, and recorded by American country music artist Dan Seals. It was released in October 1985 as the second single from the album Won't Be Blue Anymore. It reached #1 on the Country singles chart in early 1986. "Bop" was his second number one hit, but his first as a solo artist. It was a major crossover hit as well, peaking at #42 on the US Hot 100, and at #10 on the US Adult Contemporary Chart.

    Music video

The music video was directed by George Bloom. It shows an older couple preparing to travel to an armory. It concurrently shows flashbacks of the couple 30 years earlier. One of the highlights in the video is the 30-year flashback of the couple in a 1955 Ford Thunderbird that transforms 30 years later into the 1985 Ford Thunderbird. Towards the end of the video, it shows the couple in their elderly stages dancing at the armory along with many others with Seals performing the song onstage.

The video has also been included in Seals' 1991 video compilation, A Portrait, which also included the video for "They Rage On," plus three other videos for Seals' "God Must Be a Cowboy," "Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)" and "Big Wheels in the Moonlight" that were filmed especially for the compilation.

    Party

A party is a gathering of people who have been invited by a host for the purposes of socializing, conversation, recreation, or as part of a festival or other commemoration of a special occasion. A party will typically feature food and beverages, and often music and dancing or other forms of entertainment. In many Western countries, parties for teens and adults are associated with drinking alcohol such as beer, wine or distilled spirits.

    Description

Some parties are held in honor of a specific person, day, or event, such as a birthday party, a Super Bowl party, or a St. Patrick’s Day party. Parties of this kind are often called celebrations. A party is not necessarily a private occasion. Public parties are sometimes held in restaurants, pubs, beer gardens, nightclubs or bars, and people attending such parties may be charged an admission fee by the host. Large parties in public streets may celebrate events such as Mardi Gras or the signing of a peace treaty ending a long war.

    Bop (magazine)

Bop magazine was a monthly American entertainment magazine for kids 10 years of age and teens. It began publication in the summer of 1983 and was published by Laufer Media, which also publishes Tiger Beat magazine.

Popular features included articles, mini-mags, interviews, and the Fly Free To Hollywood contest, where readers had to correctly guess the stars, whether it was identifying their eyes, finding their names in a word search, or identifying them by their hair (the photos had the celebrities with their faces blacked out). A spinoff magazine, Big Bopper, later called BB, was released in the fall of 1986 and was published until 2000. Bop and Tiger Beat were very similar, as they share an editor and feature the same celebrities. Bop was sold by its founders (Julie Jenkins, Teena Naumann, Kerry Laufer and Scott Laufer) to Primedia in 1998. Primedia sold it (along with Tiger Beat) to Scott Laufer in 2003.Bop ceased publication in July 2014.
