Happy Valley set

The so-called Happy Valley set was largely a group of hedonistic British and Anglo-Irish aristocrats and adventurers who settled in the "Happy Valley" region of the Wanjohi Valley, near the Aberdare mountain range, in colonial Kenya and Uganda between the 1920s and the 1940s. In the 1930s, the group became infamous for its decadent lifestyles and exploits, following reports of drug use and sexual promiscuity.

The area around Naivasha was one of the first to be settled in Kenya by white people and was one of the main hunting grounds of the 'set'. The colonial town of Nyeri, Kenya, to the east of the Aberdare Range, was the centre of Happy Valley settlers.

The white community in Kenya in the years before the Second World War was divided into two distinct factions: settlers, on the one side, and colonial officials and tradesmen, on the other. Both were dominated by upper-middle-class and upper-class British and Irish (chiefly Anglo-Irish) people, but the two groups often disagreed on important matters ranging from land allocation to how to deal with the natives. Typically, the officials and tradesmen looked on the Happy Valley set with embarrassment.

Happy Valley (simplified Chinese: 太阳新天地购物中心; traditional Chinese: 太陽新天地購物中心; pinyin: Tàiyáng xīntiāndì) is a shopping mall in the Zhujiang New Town of the Tianhe District,Guangzhou, China.

Overview

The mall, completed in 2012, has 150,000 square metres of floor space designed by Altoon-Partners and Benoy Ltd. The total floor area makes it the biggest shopping mall in Zhujiang New Town. The mall is managed by the Paragon Group (Guangzhou).

The mall is home to many multinational retailers such as Class Cavalli of Roberto Cavalli, Maxvalu Tokai,Uniqlo,Dirk Bikkembergs,NEW LOOK,H&M,MUJI, and is home to the Guangzhou flagship venue of China Film Cinema.

The English and Chinese names of the shopping mall are unrelated: the Chinese name is 太陽新天地購物中心 (“Sun Plaza Shopping Center”).

Location and accessibility

Happy Valley is located at 36 Ma Chang Road, Guangzhou. There are 1200 dedicated parking spaces and the location is well accessible through public transport by a bus stop in front of the mall and Guangzhou Metro Line 5, Guangzhou Metro at close by Tancun Station.

Happy Valley (garden)

Happy Valley is a garden created by Edwin Harrold in Stenness, Orkney, Scotland.

History

The area was originally known as "Bankburn". The garden was created from a bare hillside by Edwin Harrold, between the October 1948 and the 1990s. Mr Harrold had to give up the garden, as he was too old to maintain it, and he died in 2005. Amongst his aims, was to create a wooded area on Orkney, as trees are highly unusual on the archipelago.

In 2004 the local council, Orkney Islands Council, took over the garden. A group was formed in 2007 called "Friends of Happy Valley"; they are a group of volunteers who meet together not only to discuss the future of the gardens, but also to work on maintaining the garden. The Council Special Projects Department assisted by maintaining some of the paths and steps, and in April 2008 volunteers planted 700 new trees to add to the existing woodland.

In May 2011, Orkney Islands Council declared Happy Valley to be an official nature reserve. The reserve is to be financially supported by the Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme.
