Happy hour

Happy hour is a marketing term for a period of time in which a public venue, such as a restaurant, bar, bowling alley, stadium, or state or county fair, offers discounts on alcoholic drinks, such as beer, wine, and cocktails. Free Hors d'oeuvres, appetizers and discounted menu items are often served during Happy hour.

Origin

The words "happy" and "hour" have appeared together for centuries when describing pleasant times. In act I, scene 2 of William Shakespeare's King Henry V (said to have been written in about 1599), for example, King Henry says, "Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour That may give furtherance to our expedition . . . ." The use of the phrase, "Happy Hour," to refer to a scheduled period of entertainment, however, is of much more recent vintage.

One possible origin of the term "Happy Hour," in the sense of a scheduled period of entertainment, is from the United States Navy. In early 1913, a group of "home makers" called the "Happy Hour Social" organized "semi-weekly smokers" on board the U.S.S. Arkansas (BB 33). The name "Happy Hour Club," "Happy Hour Social Club," and similar variants, had been in use as the names of social clubs, primarily by women's social clubs, since at least the early 1880s. By June 1913, the crew of the USS Arkansas had started referring to their regularly scheduled smokers as "Happy Hours." The "Happy Hours" included a variety of entertainment, including boxing and wrestling matches, music, dancing and movies. By the end of World War I, the practice of holding "Happy Hours" had spread throughout the entire Navy.

The Daily Targum

The Daily Targum is the official student newspaper of Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey. Founded in 1869, it is the second-oldest collegiate newspaper in the United States. The Daily Targum is student written and managed, and boasts a circulation of 15,000. In its current form, it exists as a bi-fold tabloid-style paper featuring international, national, local, and university news, as well as editorials, columns, comics, classifieds, sports, and other amusements. In 1980, the paper achieved independence from the University, establishing a non-profit organization, the Targum Publishing Company, which now oversees all areas of the paper. The Daily Targum is published Monday through Friday while classes are in session, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2006, publishing of The Newark Targum began, serving the Rutgers–Newark campus.

Happy Hour (TV series)

Happy Hour is a sitcom that debuted on Fox in the United States and on CTV in Canada on September 7, 2006. The show starred John Sloan as Henry Beckman, a young man rebuilding his life after losing his girlfriend, his job, and his apartment. The series was produced by married duo Jackie and Jeff Filgo of That '70s Show.

Fox put the show on hiatus in September 2006, and officially canceled it the following May. Thirteen episodes of Happy Hour were made, of which four have aired and nine remain unaired.

Happy Hour (Humans album)

Happy Hour, new wave band Humans' debut full-length album, was released in 1981 on I.R.S. Records, and recorded at the famed Automatt studio in San Francisco. The songs "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark"/"Get You Tonight" and "Lightning" were released as a radio station promo single. Lead singer Sterling Storm directed a longform music video based on this album. The videotape, entitled Happy Hour with the Humans, was distributed by Mike Nesmith's pioneering company, Pacific Arts Video.

Happy Hour (King Missile album)

Happy Hour is the fifth album by avant-garde band King Missile, and the band's second for Atlantic Records. It was released on December 15, 1992.

The album is exactly one hour long, hence the title.
