Bes

Bes (/bɛs/; also spelled as Bisu) is an Ancient Egyptian deity worshipped as a protector of households, and in particular, of mothers and children and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad. While past studies identified Bes as a Middle Kingdom import from Nubia, more recent research indicates that he was present in Egypt since the start of Old Kingdom. Mentions of Bes can be traced to pre-dynastic Nile Valley cultures; however his cult did not become widespread until the beginning of the New Kingdom.

Iconography

Modern scholars such as James Romano claim that in its earliest inceptions, Bes was a representation of a lion rearing up on its hind legs. After the Third Intermediate Period, Bes is often seen as just the head or the face, often worn as amulets.

Worship

Images of the deity were kept in homes and he was depicted quite differently from the other gods. Normally Egyptian gods were shown in profile, but instead Bes appeared in portrait, ithyphallic, and sometimes in a soldier's tunic, so as to appear ready to launch an attack on any approaching evil. He scared away demons from houses, so his statue was put up as a protector.

Bes (coin)

The bes was an Ancient Roman bronze coin produced during the Roman Republic. Valued at two-thirds of an as (8 unciae), it was only produced in 126 BC by C. Cassius in combination with the dodrans, another very rare denomination which was valued at three-fourths of an as.

    History

The first issue of Bitch was a ten-page feature. It was published in January 1996 in Oakland, California. The founding editors, Lisa Jervis and Andi Zeisler, along with founding art director Benjamin Shaykin, wanted to create a public forum in which to air thoughts and theories on women, gender, and feminist issues, interpreted through the lens of the media and popular culture. The first issue of Bitch was a zine, and a mere 300 copies were distributed from the trunk of a station wagon.

In 2001, a loan from San Francisco's Independent Press Association allowed Jervis and Zeisler to quit their day jobs and work on Bitch full-time and the magazine officially became a non-profit.

    Plot

A man's body is discovered in his luxury apartment, his head beaten in with one of his own golf clubs. The victim, stockbroker Brad Oosterhouse, has several messages on his answering machine, all from women.

Briscoe and Green visit Oosterhouse's most recent caller, a rich woman named Cece Vandeveer. From her they learn Oosterhouse maintained a list of wealthy female clients with whom he socialized. Ms. Vandeveer directs the detectives towards a boutique.

At the boutique the detectives discover Oosterhouse purchased three gifts of lingerie the day of his murder. One of the recipients, fashion photographer Lindsay Tucker, says she and Oosterhouse were in love and likely to be married. Ms. Tucker's alibi is she was on a fashion shoot for cosmetics mogul Jackie Scott on the day of the murder.

The detectives discover Jackie Scott (who, it turns out, is Tucker's mother) was having an affair with Oosterhouse. Briscoe and Green interview Ms. Tucker at her apartment, where Green discovers a photograph taken on the day of Oosterhouse's murder which conflicts with Ms. Tucker's alibi. Brought in for questioning, Lindsay Tucker admits to the false alibi. The detectives interview Ms. Scott in her office, when Tucker bursts in with the lingerie intended for Ms. Scott but sent to her by mistake. Lindsay Tucker immediately confesses to killing Oosterhouse through jealousy. She is arrested and charged with murder.
