Hansen (crater)

Hansen is a lunar impact crater that is located near the eastern limb of the Moon. At this location the crater appears oval due to foreshortening, but the crater is actually nearly circular. It lies to the northeast of the larger crater Condorcet, and to the south of the smaller Alhazen.

The outer wall of Hansen is sharp-edged, with a slight outward bulge to the southwest. The inner wall drops downward to a shelf of slumped material, then to a slightly bowl-shaped interior. There is a central peak formation at the midpoint of the interior.

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Hansen.

Ulmus pumila 'Hansen'

The Siberian Elm cultivar Ulmus pumila 'Hansen' is a little-known American tree of obscure origin, possibly raised from seed collected by the horticulturist and botanist Prof. Niels Hansen during his expedition to Siberia in 1897.

Description

Very similar to the species. A specimen planted in 1978 at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in England had attained a height of 8 m by 2002.

Cultivation

The tree's current status in North America is not known; at least three mature specimens survive in the UK. Significantly, it is not listed in Green's digest of elm cultivar names published in 1964, suggesting a rather belated introduction to commerce.

Crater (Aden)

Crater (/ˈkreɪtər/; Arabic: كريتر‎, [ˈkɾeːtəɾ]), also Kraytar, is a district of the Aden Governorate, Yemen. Its official name is Seera (Arabic: صيرة Ṣīrah). It is situated in a crater of an ancient volcano which forms the Shamsan Mountains. In 1991, the population was 70,319. As of 2003, the district had a population of 76,723 people.

In the closing days of British rule in 1967, Crater District became the focus of the Aden Emergency, sometimes called the last imperial war. After a mutiny of hundreds of soldiers in the South Arabian Federation Army on 20 June, all British forces withdrew from the Crater. The Crater was occupied by Arab fighters while British forces blocked off its two main entrances. In July, a British infantry battalion, led by Lt. Col. Colin Mitchell of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, entered the Crater and managed to occupy the entire district overnight with no casualties. Nevertheless, deadly guerrilla attacks soon resumed, with the British leaving Aden by the end of November 1967, earlier than had been planned by British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and without an agreement on the succeeding governance.
