HMS Cumberland was a schooner built in Port Jackson, Australia, in 1801.
Cumberland was built at the King's Dockyard in Port Jackson in 1801. From construction she was owned by the colonial government of New South Wales, which used her to transport grain from the Hawkesbury region to the settlement at Sydney Cove. Her crew consisted of five men, comprising a master, a master's mate, and three able seamen.
She was purchased by the Royal Navy in early 1803 and deployed under the command of Acting Lieutenant Charles Robbins to assist surveyor Charles Grimes in mapping the coastline of King Island and Port Phillip. On her return to Port Jackson, she was assigned to convey Matthew Flinders to England. However the poor condition of the vessel forced Flinders to put into French-controlled Mauritius, where he and the ship were interned. Cumberland remained in Mauritius when Flinders was released on 13 June 1810. Flinders left on the cartel Harriet, bound for Bengal, but when she encountered HMS Otter, he transferred to her as she was carrying dispatches to the Cape.
HMS Cumberland was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 21 October 1842 at Chatham Dockyard. She carried a crew of 620 men. In March 1854 she sailed to the Baltic Sea as war with Russia was imminent (the Crimean War). Cumberland was involved in the attack on Bomarsund, Finland in August of that year. She was converted to serve as a training ship in 1870. Cumberland was destroyed by fire in 1889.
HMS Cumberland was an 8-gun fire ship, previously the civilian vessel Alex Roberts. She was purchased in 1739 and was broken up by 1742 after service in the War of the Austrian Succession.
She was purchased from Alexander Roberts on 29 June 1739 for £782.2.4½d. She underwent fitting out at Deptford Dockyard for a further £2,070.7.5d between July and August 1739. Commissioned in July that year, she served under Commander Robert Maynard for operations in the Caribbean during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Cumberland was present at Admiral Edward Vernon's attack on the port and defences at Chagres on 23 March 1740, and was later at the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in March and April 1741.
In 1741 she came under Commander Thomas Brodrick, at Jamaica. Cumberland was refitted at Woolwich Dockyard between September 1741 and January 1742, and then surveyed in February 1742. She was then broken up at Sheerness in late March 1742.
HMS Cumberland was a three-deck 80-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Deptford Dockyard and launched on 27 December 1710. Her design corresponded to that laid down by the 1706 Establishment of dimensions for 80-gun ships.
On 4 September 1733 she was ordered to be taken to pieces and rebuilt at Woolwich according to the 1733 proposals of the 1719 Establishment. She was relaunched on 11 July 1739. In 1747, she was reduced to a 66-gun ship.
Cumberland was lost in 1760 after foundering.
Cumberland (/ˈkʌmbələnd/ KUM-bə-lənd; locally /ˈkʊmbələnd/ KUUM-bə-lənd) is a historic county of North West England that had an administrative function from the 12th century until 1974. It was bordered by Northumberland to the east, County Durham to the southeast, Westmorland and Lancashire to the south, and Dumfriesshire in Scotland to the north. It formed an administrative county from 1889 to 1974 (excluding Carlisle from 1914) and now forms part of Cumbria.
The first record of the term "Cumberland" appears in 945, when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded that the area was ceded to Malcolm I of Scotland by King Edmund of England. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 most of the future county remained part of Scotland although some villages in the ancient district of Millom, which were the possessions of the Earl of Northumbria, were included in the Yorkshire section with the Furness region.
In 1092 King William Rufus of England invaded the Carlisle district, settling it with colonists. He created an Earldom of Carlisle, and granted the territory to Ranulf Meschyn. In 1133 Carlisle was made the see of a new diocese, identical with the area of the earldom. However, on the death of King Henry I in 1135, the area was regained by Scotland's King David I. He was able to consolidate his power and made Carlisle one of his chief seats of government, while England descended into a lengthy civil war. In 1157 Henry II of England resumed possession of the area from Malcolm IV of Scotland, and formed two new counties from the former earldom: Westmorland and "Carliol". The silver-mining area of Alston, previously associated with the Liberty of Durham, was also added to the new county of Carliol for financial reasons. By 1177 the county of Carliol was known as Cumberland. The border between England and Scotland was made permanent by the Treaty of York in 1237.
