H3 (classification)

H3 is a Paralympic cycling classification. The UCI recommends this be coded as MH3 or WH3.

Definition

PBS defined this classification as "Athletes with higher function and stability are in classes H2 and H3, and H4 is for athletes who can kneel on the handcycle." In 2012, UCI defined this classification broadly as: "Paraplegic with impairments corresponding to a complete lesion from Th11 or below".The Telegraph defined this classification in 2011 as "H 1-4: Athletes on handcycles, with lower limb dysfunctions and limited stability"

The cycle

This classification can use an AP2 recumbent, which is a competition cycle that is reclined at 30 degrees and has a rigid frame. This classification can also use an AP3 hand cycle which is inclined at 0 degrees and is reclined on a rigid competition frame. The classification can also use an ATP2 cycle which is a long seated forward cycle on a rigid frame.

Classification history

Cycling first became a Paralympic sport at the 1988 Summer Paralympics. In September 2006, governance for para-cycling passed from the International Paralympic Committee's International Cycling Committee to UCI at a meeting in Switzerland. When this happened, the responsibility of classifying the sport also changed.

H3 (film)

H3 is a film released in 2001 about the 1981 Irish hunger strike at HM Prison Maze in Northern Ireland, the events leading up to it, and subsequent developments in the prisoners' struggle for Prisoner of War status. It was directed by Les Blair and was written by Brian Campbell and Laurence McKeown; McKeown was a former volunteer in the Provisional IRA who participated in the hunger strike.
