H. T. Kung

H. T. Kung (Kung, Hsiang-Tsung; Chinese: 孔祥重; pinyin: Kong Xiangchong; b. November 9, 1945) is a Taiwanese American computer scientist. His research is primarily in the area of machine learning, signal processing and compressive sensing, and parallel computing, but his interests have been broad-ranging, including computational complexity theory, database theory, VLSI design, and parallel computing.

Kung received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from National Tsing Hua University in 1968 and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1974, and first taught there, where his research included work on novel parallel computers and the popularization of the Systolic array. He joined Harvard University in 1992, where he is the William H. Gates Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Kung also is co-chair of Harvard's "PhD in Information, Technology and Management" Program.

Kung is a member of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan, and also of the National Academy of Engineering in the United States. He is a recipient of the Inventor of the Year Award by the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association in 1991.

Hīt

Hīt (Arabic: هيت‎) is an Iraqi city in Al-Anbar province. Hīt lies northwest of Ramadi, the provincial capital.

On the Euphrates River, Hīt is a small walled town built on two mounds on the site of the ancient city of Is; bitumen wells in the vicinity have been utilized for at least 3,000 years and were used in the building of Babylon. Hīt is a marketplace for agricultural produce and oil pipelines to the Mediterranean Sea cross the Euphrates there. It was regarded as the head of navigation on the river before the decline in river traffic.

As of December 13, 2014, the city is under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Hōtō

Hōtō (ほうとう) is a popular regional dish originating from Yamanashi, Japan made by stewing flat udon noodles and vegetables in miso soup. Though hōtō is commonly recognized as a variant of udon, locals do not consider it to be an udon dish because the dough is prepared in the style of dumplings rather than noodles.

Origins

Wheat farming and the flour culture were brought into Yamanashi prefecture due to shortages in local rice crops. Sericulture had turned lands traditionally reserved for rice crops into silk farms, and flour products like hōtō were invented as a means to counter food shortages which arose from this change in agriculture.

This transition may have begun in Yamanashi's Gunnai region, where rice farming was impossible to begin with due to cold temperature and large amounts of volcanic debris embedded into the soil. Wheat farming spread through the rest of the prefecture and into the neighboring Nagano, Shizuoka, Saitama, and Gunma prefectures, where similar cuisine using flour dough and soup can also be found. For example, a dish called nibōtō, which is identical to hōtō except with a soy sauce-flavored soup, can be found throughout Saitama and Gunma prefectures.

Lev Skrbenský z Hříště

Lev Skrbenský z Hříště, German: Leo Skrbenský von Hříště, also spelt Skrebensky (June 12, 1863, Hausdorf (now a part of Bartošovice), Moravia, Austria-Hungary – December 24, 1938, Olomouc, Czechoslovakia) was a prominent Cardinal in the Catholic Church during the early 20th century.

Of uncertain but undoubtedly wealthy background (it is sometimes believed he was an illegitimate child of the Habsburg Monarchy) , Lev Skrbensky z Hriste was educated at the prestigious seminary of Olomouc and during the 1880s worked on a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. After being ordained in 1889, he went into the Austro-Hungarian Army and spent the following decade serving as an army chaplain.

He left his military duties in 1899, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria selected him as Archbishop of Prague. Two years later, he was made a cardinal on 15 April 1901, at the age of thirty-seven. He received the red hat on 9 June 1902. He participated in the 1903 and 1914 conclaves, and in 1916 was transferred to the prestigious see of Olomouc, to which he was elected by its cathedral chapter at the request of the Habsburg government. He resigned this see in 1920 because his poor health and did not participate in the 1922 conclave.
