Stuart Hughes

Stuart Hughes (born August 9, 1959 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian actor known for his leading roles on the stages of Shaw Festival, Stratford Festival, Soulpepper Theatre Company (of which he is a founding member), and many other Canadian theatre companies.

He has received three Dora Awards for the roles of Billy in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, The Man in On the Verge (Tarragon Theatre), and Kit Carson in The Time Of Your Life (Soulpepper).

As a teenager, Hughes lived in London, Ontario where he attended Saunders Secondary School and played French horn and violin in the school orchestra and band. He performed in school drama productions and also had roles in plays at Theatre London.

Stuart lives in Toronto, Ontario with his wife actress Michelle Monteith and daughter.

Stuart Hughes (politician)

Stuart Hughes is an English politician representing voters at all three levels of local government in Devon, in the West of England. He represents Sidford as a councillor on East Devon District Council and on Devon County Council, where he is currently Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation. He is also a Sidmouth town councillor.

After twice standing unsuccessfully for the House of Commons as a Raving Loony, he was elected at the district and county level in Devon in 1991 and 1993 for the Raving Loony Green Giant Party, becoming the party's first successful candidate at a contested election of any kind. However, he transferred to the Conservatives in 1997 and has been elected for them ever since.

Career

Hughes became a disc jockey in 1969. In the 1980s, he was a hotelier and the owner of a music club called Carinas in Fore Street, Sidmouth, and also an active member of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. At the European Parliament election, 1989, Hughes stood for the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in the Devon constituency of the European Parliament, gaining 2,241 votes, less than 1% of the votes cast.

Henry Stuart Hughes (May 16, 1916 New York City – October 21, 1999 La Jolla, California) was an American historian, professor, and activist; he also advocated the application of psychoanalysis to history.

Early life

Hughes was born to privilege as the grandson of Charles Evans Hughes, 1916 Republican Party nominee for President, and claimed in his memoirs to have been used as a "campaign baby" as an infant. Hughes' father left for World War I while Stuart was still an infant, returning a year later when his son was three. Stuart was his parents' second child and second son and was born only 14 months after his elder brother, Charles Evans Hughes, III; the couple was later to have two daughters as well.

In 1922, Hughes' family moved to suburban Riverdale, Bronx, New York, where he spent most of his boyhood. This was interrupted in early 1929, when Hughes' father Charles Evans Hughes, Jr. was appointed United States Solicitor General by the new President, Herbert Hoover. The family's stay in Washington, D.C. was relatively brief; Charles Hughes, Jr. was compelled to resign as Solicitor General when his father was appointed Chief Justice of the United States upon the death of William Howard Taft in 1930. He moved his family back to New York. Stuart was soon sent to boarding school at Deerfield Academy. He then attended Amherst College from 1933 to 1937. While in college, Hughes spent two summers in Germany in summer study programs, which were to serve him in good stead later.
