Guntur mandal

Guntur mandal is one of the 57 mandals in Guntur district of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is under the administration of Guntur revenue division with its headquarters at Guntur, The mandal is under the administration of Guntur revenue division and bounded by Medikonduru, Tadikonda, Pedakakani, Edlapadu, Prathipadu, Vatticherukuru and Chebrole mandals.

Demographics

As of 2011 census, the mandal had a population of 779,289. The total population constitute, 389,582 males and 389,707 females —a sex ratio of 1000 females per 1000 males. 77,189 children are in the age group of 0–6 years, of which 39,616 are boys and 37,573 are girls. The average literacy rate stands at 78.82% with 553,422 literates. The mandal has unique characteristics like having largest urban area, highest population and population density and the most number of literates of all the mandals of the district.

Governance

The mandal is also a part of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region under the jurisdiction of APCRDA. The mandal is under the control of a tahsildar and the present tahsildar is Tata Mohan Rao.

The city is famous for its exports, including Chilli pepper, cotton, and tobacco. It is the largest producer of chilies in India.

Etymology

The name of the town Guntur stems or originates from two Telugu words Gunta meaning Tank or a Reservoir and Ooru meaning 'Town' or Settlement. That translates to a town that has plenty of water tanks or reservoirs.From ancient times too the area had unique importance, plenty of reservoirs and tanks were everywhere in the area, to store water for both domestic needs and irrigation purposes as well.

Guntur (Lok Sabha constituency) is one of the 25 lok sabha constituencies of Andhra Pradesh in India and one among the three constituencies in the Guntur district of the state. It was constituted in 1989 and N.G.Ranga was the first member of parliament from the constituency and the present being Jayadev Galla, who won the 2014 lok sabha election representing Telugu Desam Party.
