Guntur district

Guntur district is an administrative district in the Coastal Andhra region of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The administrative seat of the district is located at Guntur, which is also the largest city of the district in terms of area and population. It has a coastline of approximately 100 km and is situated on the right bank of Krishna River, that separates it from Krishna district and extends till it empties into the Bay of Bengal. It is bounded on the south by Prakasam district and on the west by the state of Telangana. It has an area of 11,391 km2 (4,398 sq mi) and is the 2nd most populous district in the state a population of 4,889,230 as per 2011 census of India.

The district is a major centre for agriculture, education and learning. It exports large quantities of chillies and tobacco.Amaravati, the proposed capital of Andhra Pradesh is situated in Guntur district, on the banks of River Krishna.

Etymology

There are several opinions on the meaning and origin of the word Guntur. In Sanskrit, Guntur was called Garthapuri.

Guntur ( pronunciation ); is a city in the Guntur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is situated in Guntur mandal of Guntur revenue division. The city is a municipal corporation and the administrative headquarters of Guntur district. The city is also one of the suburbs of the state capital Amaravati, under the jurisdiction of APCRDA. It is the third most populous city in the state with a population of 743,354, and an urban agglomeration population of 1,028,667.

The city is renowned for education, business, e-commerce industry, and agriculture. The region around the city up to Visakhapatnam, is identified as a major industrial corridor in India. The city is famous for its exports, including Chilli pepper, cotton, and tobacco. It is the largest producer of chilies in India.

Etymology

The name of the town Guntur stems or originates from two Telugu words Gunta meaning Tank or a Reservoir and Ooru meaning 'Town' or Settlement. That translates to a town that has plenty of water tanks or reservoirs.From ancient times too the area had unique importance, plenty of reservoirs and tanks were everywhere in the area, to store water for both domestic needs and irrigation purposes as well.

It was constituted in 1989 and N.G.Ranga was the first member of parliament from the constituency and the present being Jayadev Galla, who won the 2014 lok sabha election representing Telugu Desam Party.
