Hotline (2014 film)

Hotline is a 2014 documentary feature film written and directed by Tony Shaff. The film explores the intense connections that are made between strangers over the telephone, and explores these anonymous conversations people are often too hesitant to have with the people closest to them. The film stars Miss Cleo, Jeff Ragsdale, Jamie Blaine, and Tonya Jone Miller.

The film was first shown in Toronto at Hot Docs on April 2014, where it was an official selection and audience and jury favorite. On August 9, 2014 Hotline won First Prize for Best Feature Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. On May 9, 2014 the Brooklyn Film Festival announced that Hotline had been selected for inclusion in its prestigious feature film line-up.

Synopsis

Hotline explores telephone hotlines throughout the United States. We meet Brad Becker of the GLBT Hotline, Youree Dell Harris (aka Miss Cleo, formerly of the Psychic Readers Network), the Homework Hotline in Nashville, Tenn. We meet the telephone volunteers at the Anti-Violence Project, Alan Ross of the Samaritans in New York. Jamie Blaine is a crisis counselor in Nashville, Tennessee. Brent Furlong is a pastor who runs Go Time Ministries in Pennsylvania. Tonya Jone Miller runs the Bay City Blues sex-line in Portland, Oregon. We see another telephone sex worker known only as Gypsy. We meet Jeff Ragsdale, the eponymous Jeff, One Lonely Guy hotline out of New York.

9-1-1

9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), one of eight N11 codes. This number is intended for use in emergency circumstances only, and to use it for any other purpose (such as prank calls) can be a crime.

In over 98 percent of locations in the United States and Canada, dialing "9-1-1" from any telephone will link the caller to an emergency dispatch center—called a Public-Safety Answering Point (PSAP), by the telecom industry—which can send emergency responders to the caller's location in an emergency. In approximately 96 percent of the U.S., the Enhanced 9-1-1 system automatically pairs caller numbers with a physical address.

History

In the earliest days of telephone technology, prior to the development of the rotary dial telephone, all telephone calls were operator-assisted. To place a call, the caller was required to pick up the telephone receiver, sometimes turn a magneto crank, and wait for the telephone operator to answer. The caller would then ask to be connected to the number they wished to call, and the operator would make the required connection manually, by means of a switchboard.

Plea

In legal terms, a plea is simply an answer to a claim made by someone in a criminal case under common law using the adversarial system. Colloquially, a plea has come to mean the assertion by a defendant at arraignment, or otherwise in response to a criminal charge, whether that person pleaded guilty, not guilty, no contest or (in the United States) Alford plea.

The concept of the plea is one of the major differences between criminal procedure under common law and procedure under the civil law system. Under common law, a plea of guilty by the defendant waives trial of the charged offences and the defendant may be sentenced immediately. This produces a system known under American law as plea bargaining.

In civil law jurisdictions, there is generally no concept of a plea of guilty. A confession by the defendant is treated like any other piece of evidence, and a full confession does not prevent a full trial from occurring or relieve the plaintiff(s) from its duty of presenting a case to the trial court.

Talvar (film)

Talvar (English title: Guilty) is a 2015 Bollywood drama film written by Vishal Bharadwaj and directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film is based on the 2008 Noida double murder case, in which a teenage girl and her family servant were found murdered, and her parents were convicted for the murders. The film stars Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neeraj Kabi and Sohum Shah in leading roles and Tabu in a guest appearance. The film is produced by Junglee Pictures, the films division of The Times of India Group. Originally Nyodda, the film's title was changed to Talvar in February 2015. The film's premiere was at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Talvar presents three contradictory accounts of the case, which variously portray the parents as guilty or innocent. Meghna Gulzar has stated that her script is completely objective and unbiased. However, multiple reviewers have remarked that the film's Rashomon-style storytelling is designed to show the parents in sympathetic light. At the 61st Filmfare Awards, Talvar was nominated for five awards, including Best Film, and it won the Filmfare Award for Best Editing.

Guilty (Gravity Kills song)

Guilty is a remix single by Gravity Kills, released by TVT Records.

It also includes the album version of the song, and tracks 6 and 7 include both the remix by tomandandy, and the demo version of "Goodbye".

The Juno Reactor remix of the song was featured in the Stanley Cup FMV sequence in NHL '99 and featured in the film, Beowulf.

Noticeably absent from the "Guilty" single is the song's 'Single Remix', which played on radio stations and garnered Gravity Kills brief mainstream popularity in 1996. However, the single version was included on the Se7en soundtrack, which was released before the band's popularity in 1995. Although the song on the soundtrack is in fact, the 'Single Remix' version, it is not denoted as such on the soundtrack packaging.

"Guilty" was heard in the promo for the fifth season of True Blood.
