Guido of Siena

Guido of Siena, was an Italian painter, active during the 13th-century in Siena, and painting in a Byzantine style.

Biography

The name Guido is known from the large panel in the church of San Domenico, Siena of the Virgin and Child Enthroned. The rhymed Latin inscription gives the painter's name as Guido de Senis, with the date 1221. However, this date cannot relate to the painting of the panel, which is usually dated on the basis of style to the 1270s. The faces of the Virgin and Child were scraped and repainted in the early 14th century in the manner of Duccio and so are not representative of Guido's original. A dossal featuring the Virgin and Child with four saints (accession No. 7) in the Siena Pinacoteca has an identical inscription, but unfortunately the name before "de Senis" has been cut off. It is very often assumed that the missing name is Guido, and gives us some indication of the original appearance of the Madonna at San Domenico.

Beyond this, little is known of Guido da Siena and his place in Sienese painting before Duccio. Because he is the only Sienese painter of the time to have surviving works on panel with a signature, he is often viewed as the most important artistic personality at the time and the first master of the great Sienese school of painting. However, Bellosi has attempted to associate some "Guidesque" works with the names Dietsalvi di Speme and Guido di Graziano, who are documented with the painting of Biccherna book covers for the Sienese commune in the 1270s. Some equate Guido as the father of Meo di Siena.

Guido Pisano

Guido Pisano (died 1149) was a prelate and diplomat from Pisa. He probably belonged to the family of the counts of Caprona, and was promoted to the College of Cardinals and appointed to the deaconry of Santi Cosma e Damiano by Pope Innocent II on 4 March 1132.

Between 10 and 11 December 1146 he was created Papal chancellor by the Pisan Pope Eugene III. He was widely travelled, intervening in Spain, Portugal, France and Germany, and well-connected, to Wibald, to Anselm of Havelberg and to a succession of popes as well as several emperors and kings.

Guido served as a Papal legate to the Spains on three occasions. His first visit probably took place in 1133–34, his second in 1135–37 and his third and final in 1143. During the first he went to León (before August 1134), there to either preside over a synod or attend the royal court, to resolve in favour of Bernardo of Compostela a dispute with his archbishop, Diego Gelmírez, and to confirm the election of Berengar as Bishop of Salamanca, also against Diego's wishes. During the second he presided over a synod in Burgos, which granted an indulgence to the Confraternity of Belchite, and on 26 November 1143 during the third he held a council at Girona, where Count Raymond Berengar IV of Barcelona granted of fifth of the territory he had conquered from the Moors to the Knights Templar. On his way through southern France on his first legation, he resolved in favour of the abbey of Saint-Thibéry a dispute over the church of Bessan with the monastery of La Chaise-Dieu.

History

Siena, like other Tuscan hill towns, was first settled in the time of the Etruscans (c. 900–400 BC) when it was inhabited by a tribe called the Saina. The Etruscans were an advanced people who changed the face of central Italy through their use of irrigation to reclaim previously unfarmable land, and their custom of building their settlements in well-defended hill forts. A Roman town called Saena Julia was founded at the site in the time of the Emperor Augustus. The first document mentioning it dates from AD 70. Some archaeologists assert that Siena was controlled for a period by a Gaulish tribe called the Senones.
