Guardian (fireboat)

Guardian is a fireboat owned by San Francisco Fire Department and operated in the San Francisco Bay since 1990 in reserve status. Guardian was a gift to the people of San Francisco by anonymous donors following the notable role of the fireboat Phoenix in helping to save the Marina District buildings from further destruction by fire following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Both Guardian and Phoenix fireboats are based at Firehouse No. 35 at Pier 22½ of the Port of San Francisco. Guardian has 5 pumps which can deliver up to 26,000 gallons of water per minute, significantly more than Phoenix, making it the most powerful fireboat in the world in terms of pumping capacity.

History

Guardian was built by Yarrows, LTD of British Columbia in 1951 and was hull number 115.

Guardian served the city of Vancouver, Canada from 1951 until the time it was retired in 1987 by Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services under the name Fireboat #2.

Though the city of San Francisco had operated two fireboats from the early 1900 until 1954, the Phoenix was the only fireboat in the city from 1955 until the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Because of the role of Phoenix in the protection of the Marina District after the 1989 earthquake, $50,000 from grateful Marina property owners and $300,000 from anonymous donors were used purchase and refurbish Guardian. Upon arrival in San Francisco, the ship was rechristened Guardian, a name chosen by the school children of San Francisco at the request of the anonymous donors.

Legal guardian

A legal guardian is a person who has the legal authority (and the corresponding duty) to care for the personal and property interests of another person, called a ward. Guardians are typically used in three situations: guardianship for an incapacitated senior (due to old age or infirmity), guardianship for a minor, and guardianship for developmentally disabled adults.

Guardianship for incapacitated senior

A guardianship for an incapacitated senior will typically arise where someone determines that a senior has become unable to care for their own person or property. Usually there is a belief that the senior is being financially exploited or about to be exploited. Other times the person will become unable to care for him or herself and is not able to properly engage in the activities of daily living without assistance. There will typically be a precipitating incident that causes a professional, family member, health care worker or clergyman to initiate guardianship proceedings.

Guardian (DC Comics)

Guardian (James Jacob "Jim" Harper) is a DC Comics superhero, created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. He first appeared in Star-Spangled Comics #7 (April 1942). Guardian resembles an earlier Kirby and Simon character Captain America (first published in March 1941 by Marvel Comics) in that he had no super powers and carried an indestructible shield.

Jim Harper

Jim Harper is a police officer in Metropolis' Suicide Slum who became a vigilante to catch crooks that the law could not prosecute, describing himself as guarding society from criminals. He was trained to fighting condition by ex-boxer Joe Morgan (the same man who trained two other mystery men, Wildcat and the first Atom). He was aided by a group of boys known as the Newsboy Legion, to whom he was, literally, a guardian, having volunteered to take them in rather than allowing them to be sent to prison; he did so on the grounds that they were basically good kids who just needed a chance. The Legion grew up to become the heads of the Cadmus Project, subsequently saving Harper's life by transferring his mind from his old, dying body into a younger clone of himself.
