Greentree Stable

Greentree Stable, in Red Bank, New Jersey, was a major American thoroughbred horse racing stable and breeding farm established in 1914 by Payne Whitney of the Whitney family of New York City. Payne Whitney operated a horse farm and stable at Saratoga Springs, New York with his brother Harry Payne Whitney, who also had a large stable of horses. Greentree Stable had a training base at Aiken, South Carolina, while Greentree Farm in Lexington, Kentucky was established in 1925 as its breeding arm.

History

After Whitney's steeplechase horse won the 1911 Greentree Cup race at Great Neck, New York, it was decided to use the Greentree name for several of their properties. Following Payne Whitney's death in 1927, his widow Helen Hay Whitney took over the operation. With her children John Hay Whitney and Joan Whitney Payson, they continued to build on the stable's success.

Greentree Stable horses won many important steeplechase and flat races throughout the United States. As part of a program honoring important Thoroughbred tracks and racing stables, the Pennsylvania Railroad named its baggage car #5859 the "Greentree Stable". In January 1928 Thomas W. Murphy, a renowned harness racing trainer, became head trainer for Greentree Stable. Murphy stayed until the end of the 1930 Pimlico fall meeting, and was replaced by James G. Rowe, Jr..

Greentree

Greentree is a 400-acre (1.6 km²) estate in Manhasset, New York on Long Island. Payne Whitney purchased the estate for his bride, Helen Julia Hay, in 1904. Later, John Hay Whitney and his second wife, Betsey, occupied the main house, where Mrs. Whitney remained in residence there until her death in 1998.

Radio and TV talk show pioneers John Reagan "Tex" McCrary, and his wife, model and movie star Jinx Falkenburg, with their sons Kevin "Jock" McCrary and John Reagan "Paddy" McCrary, lived on and off the Jock Whitney estate from 1947 to 1977.

As with other Gold Coast Mansions, the original estate was pieced together. The five family farms that were purchased to make up the new estate were the Mitchell, Ketchum, Brinkerhoff, Skidmore, and Schenck farms. The estate was later divided, with gifts of land being made to several organizations. The North Shore Unitarian Universalist Society, now known as the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock (UUCSR), received a portion adjacent to Shelter Rock Road and has built a large Worship Hall on the site of the former Apple Orchard. The old clay real tennis court was removed at that time. North Shore Manhasset Hospital also received a donation of property adjacent to Community Drive. John Hay Whitney was an honorary member of the Manhasset Lakeville Fire Department, and donated the land along Community Drive East to be the site of the M.L.FD. Company Two fire house, and Nassau County Police Departments 6th Precinct. The remaining 408 acres, including the family home, are run by the Greentree Foundation, as a conference center dedicated to international justice and human rights issues.

Green Tree, Pennsylvania

Green Tree is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, and a suburb of Pittsburgh. The population was 4,432 at the 2010 census.

The town is the hometown of U.S. Congressman and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and Heroes star Zachary Quinto, both of whom were born in nearby Pittsburgh. Green Tree is connected to Pittsburgh via the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

History

Settled in 1793, the area stayed rural until the late 1800s, with paintings of the time showing farmland and a vineyard. The community took its name from the local Green Tree Hotel. Rook Station on the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway opened in 1904 which heralded an industrialisation of the area and the opening of a railroad yard and roundhouse.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), all of it land.
