Gravitar
Gravitar is a color vector graphics arcade game released by Atari, Inc. in 1982. Using the same rotate-and-thrust controls as Asteroids, Gravitar was known for its difficulty. It was the first of over twenty games Mike Hally designed and produced for Atari, including Star Wars. The main programmer was Rich Adam and the cabinet art was designed by Brad Chaboya. Over 5,427 cabinets were produced.
Gameplay
The player controls a small blue spacecraft. The game starts in a fictional solar system with several planets to explore. If the player moves his ship into a planet, he will be taken to a side-view landscape. Unlike many other shooting games, gravity plays a fair part in Gravitar: the ship will be pulled slowly to the deadly star in the overworld, and downward in the side-view levels.
The player has five buttons: two to rotate the ship left or right, one to shoot, one to activate the thruster, and one for both a tractor beam and force field. Gravitar, Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe and Space Duel all used similar 5-button controlling system.
Gravitar (band)
Gravitar were an American noise rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan formed in 1992 by Eric Cook, Harold Richardson and Geoff Walker. In 1995, Richardson parted ways with the band and was replaced by Michael J. Walker, Geoff's brother. Aside from heavy metal and psychedelic acts such as Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, Gravitar's music is strongly influenced by experimental music, jazz, and is mostly improvisational.
History
Gravitar's roots can be traced back to the band Stinkeye, a band from Mt. Pleasant featuring Eric Cook and Harold Richardson. Both Geoff Walker and Richardson purchased music at Schoolkids Records in Ann Arbor and eventually formed a bond over their eccentric musical tastes. Harold Richardson chose the name Gravitar as a name for the newly formed band. Cook, who was unaware of the Atari videogame, liked the name because it had a sense of weight and thickness. The band's debut album Chinga su Corazon, which in Spanish means "fuck your heart", was released in 1993 through Charnel Music.
