Grand Rapids (baseball team)

The Grand Rapids Baseball Club was a minor league baseball team based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA that played under several different names at various times between 1883 and 1951. They played mostly in the Central League but also in various other Michigan-based leagues.

The West Michigan White Caps have played in Comstock Park, Michigan, just outside Grand Rapids, since 1994.

Grand Rapids is the second-largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the largest city in West Michigan. It is located on the Grand River about 30 miles east of Lake Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 188,040. In 2010, the Grand Rapids metropolitan area had a population of 1,005,648, and the combined statistical area of Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland had a population of 1,321,557. Grand Rapids is the county seat of Kent County, Michigan.

A historic furniture-manufacturing center, Grand Rapids is still home to five of the world's leading office furniture companies, and is nicknamed Furniture City. Its more common modern nickname of River City refers to the landmark river for which it was named. The city and surrounding communities are economically diverse, based in the health care, information technology, automotive, aviation, and consumer goods manufacturing industries, among others.

Grand Rapids is the hometown of U.S. President Gerald Ford, who is buried with his wife Betty on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in the city.

History

Grand Rapids formed in 2009 comprising Dan Lardner (Guitar/Vocals), Alex Niemetz (Bass/Occasional Guitar/Vocals), Peter Baumann (Lead Guitar), and Clara Balzary (Drums), after Clara moved to New York from Los Angeles, and offered to play drums with the then-teenage trio, completing the two boy/two girl line up and solidifying the complement that would become Grand Rapids.

Feels Like a Lifetime Single

On May 21, 2012, Grand Rapids released their debut single ‘Feels Like A Lifetime’ b/w ‘Was That A Joke?’ on Too Pure Records in the U.K. On April 5, SPIN, magazine's website premiered the track as an MP3 download. A music video for "Feels Like a Lifetime" was released on May 2, 2012. The music video for "Was that Joke" premiered on June 26, 2012.

Vernon J. Ehlers Station

The Vernon J. Ehlers Station is a train station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States served by Amtrak, the U.S. national railroad passenger system. The station is the terminus of the Pere Marquette line that connects Chicago's Union Station to Grand Rapids. It opened at its new location on Century Avenue under the Wealthy Street/US-131 overpass, immediately south of The Rapid's Central Station.

The new central location allows easy connections to twenty local Rapid buses as well as Greyhound and Indian Trails intercity services. No plans have been announced yet to move Megabus services from their location opposite the old Amtrak station at Wealthy/Market to complete the multimodal transit hub.

History

The previous Amtrak station opened in 1984 at the corner of Wealthy Street and Market Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids.

In October 2011, groundbreaking occurred on the new station. It is named in honor of former Michigan Congressman Vern Ehlers. The new station enables fully intermodal transit while allowing for more efficient train turnarounds. It was funded by a US$3.8 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration and $850,000 from the City of Grand Rapids. Due to delays in construction from CSX and the City of Grand Rapids, the station construction started in the summer of 2013. The new station opened Monday, October 27, 2014, the first train left on time.

Rapids

Rapids are sections of a river where the river bed has a relatively steep gradient, causing an increase in water velocity and turbulence. Rapids are hydrological features between a run (a smoothly flowing part of a stream) and a cascade. Rapids are characterised by the river becoming shallower with some rocks exposed above the flow surface. As flowing water splashes over and around the rocks, air bubbles become mixed in with it and portions of the surface acquire a white colour, forming what is called "whitewater". Rapids occur where the bed material is highly resistant to the erosive power of the stream in comparison with the bed downstream of the rapids. Very young streams flowing across solid rock may be rapids for much of their length.

Rapids are categorized in classes, generally running from I to VI. A Class 5 rapid may be categorized as Class 5.1-5.9. While class I rapids are easy to negotiate and require no maneuvering, class VI rapids pose threat to life with little or no chance for rescue.

Rapids! were an indie rock band from Bournemouth, England, which formed in August 2009.

Career

Rapids! held their debut gig in a small bar in Bournemouth in October 2009. They released their first three track, self-titled EP in November 2009, limited to 200 copies and containing their earliest songs: "Maps", "Void" and "The Elitist". Following further time in the studio, they released a six track EP in March 2010, building on their first three tracks with the songs "Fuses", "Economics" and "Inland Empire".

Between October 2009 and early 2010, Rapids! played a large number of shows across the south coast of England, gaining favourable reviews in Artrocker and Rocksound, as well as having airplay on John Kennedy’s XFM show. The band signed to the London based record label, Heist Or Hit Records, in July 2009.

In summer 2010, a year after forming, Rapids! built on the earlier XFM radio play with the track "Fuses" being played by Tom Robinson. Steve Lamacq invited the band on to his show for a live interview and radio play. In September 2010, Rapids! played a live session for BBC Introducing on BBC 6 Music.

Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System

The Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS) is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) system used to issue the definitive credential within DoD. RAPIDS uses information stored in the DoD Defense Enrollment and Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) when providing these credentials. Used together, these two systems are commonly referred to as a DEERS/RAPIDS system or DEERS/RAPIDS infrastructure.

RAPIDS ensures that DoD identification credentials are provided only to personnel with a current and appropriate affiliation with the DoD

Capture unique identifying characteristics

RAPIDS captures identifying characteristics that are unique and are used to bind an individual to the information maintained in DEERS and in line with the identifying credentials issued by RAPIDS. These include, but are not limited to:
