Grand Forks County, North Dakota

Grand Forks County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2010 census, its population was 66,861, making it the third-most populous county in North Dakota. Its county seat and largest community is Grand Forks. The county was created in 1873 and later organized in 1875.

Grand Forks County is included in the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,440 square miles (3,700 km²), of which 1,436 square miles (3,720 km²) is land and 3.1 square miles (8.0 km²) (0.2%) is water.

Grand Forks, North Dakota

Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the State of North Dakota (after Fargo and Bismarck) and the county seat of Grand Forks County. According to the 2010 census, the city's population was 52,838, while that of the city and surrounding metropolitan area was 98,461. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or The Grand Cities.

Located on the western banks of the Red River of the North in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding and was struck by the devastating Red River Flood of 1997. Originally called Les Grandes Fourches by French fur traders, Grand Forks was founded in 1870 by steamboat captain Alexander Griggs and incorporated on February 22, 1881. Its location at the fork of the Red River and the Red Lake River gives the city its name.

Historically dependent on local agriculture, the city's economy now encompasses higher education, defense, health care, manufacturing, food processing, and scientific research. Grand Forks is served by Grand Forks International Airport and Grand Forks Air Force Base, while the city's University of North Dakota is the oldest institution of higher education in the state. The Alerus Center and Ralph Engelstad Arena host athletic and other events, while the North Dakota Museum of Art and Chester Fritz Auditorium are the city's largest cultural venues.

Grand Forks station

Grand Forks is a train station in western Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is served by Amtrak's Empire Builder line.

It is located at a railroad wye where Amtrak trains headed for Chicago turn south. The station was built by Amtrak in 1982, replacing the use of a Great Northern station downtown and allowing Amtrak to serve the city without having to go downtown and then back up. For a while before the station officially opened, trains stopped here and passengers were bussed to and from the old station. The former Great Northern station has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990.

Grand Forks is served by Amtrak's daily Empire Builder. Of the seven North Dakota stations served by Amtrak, Grand Forks was the fourth busiest in FY10, boarding or detraining an average of about 55 passengers daily. The station is owned by Amtrak. The platform and tracks are owned by BNSF Railway.
