Governor of Chiapas

This is a list of governors of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The state constitution stipulates a term of 6 years, to which governors can only be elected once. It also specifies the qualifications for becoming Governor: a Mexican citizen by birth, aged at least 30 years old, and having not less than 5 years residency in Chiapas. The current governor is Manuel Velasco Coello from the PVEM, who assumed the position in 2012.

Chiapas

Chiapas (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃjapas]), officially Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Chiapas), is one of the 31 states that, with the Federal District, make up the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is divided into 122 municipalities and its capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Other important population centers in Chiapas include San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán, Tapachula and Arriaga. Located in Southwestern Mexico, it is the southernmost state, bordered by the states of Oaxaca to the west, Veracruz to the northwest and Tabasco to the north, and by the Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango and San Marcos departments of Guatemala to the east and southeast. Chiapas has a coastline along the Pacific Ocean to the south.

In general, Chiapas has a humid, tropical climate. In the north, in the area bordering Tabasco, near Teapa, rainfall can average more than 3,000 mm (120 in) per year. In the past, natural vegetation at this region was lowland, tall perennial rainforest, but this vegetation has been destroyed almost completely to give way to agriculture and ranching. Rainfall decreases moving towards the Pacific Ocean, but it is still abundant enough to allow the farming of bananas and many other tropical crops near Tapachula. On the several parallel "sierras" or mountain ranges running along the center of Chiapas, climate can be quite temperate and foggy, allowing the development of cloud forests like those of the Reserva de la Biosfera el Triunfo, home to a handful of resplendent quetzals and horned guans.

Chiapas Fútbol Club formerly known as Club de Fútbol Jaguares de Chiapas is a football club based in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico currently playing in the Liga MX. The team plays their home matches at the Estadio Víctor Manuel Reyna. They are also known as Chiapas Jaguar.

The club in its Chiapas reincarnation was "founded" on 27 June 2002. They played their first game on 3 August against Tigres de la UANL, losing 3–1, with Lucio Filomeno scoring the club's first ever goal. The club's first win came on 25 August, a 1–0 win over San Luis. They finished the Apertura 2002, with a record of three wins, seven draws, and nine defeats. In the Clausura 2005 they finished with six wins, four draws, and seven defeats, and the head coach José Luis Trejo was sacked in the middle of the season. The club then named Antonio Mohamed as manager, but poor results meant another change with Fernando Quirarte taking over for the remainder of the season, bringing stability to the team and results improved. They won the Chiapas Cup in 2004 and on 16 July 2005, they won the Chiapas Cup for a second time, by defeating Necaxa at the Victor Manuel Reyna Stadium. In February 2008 Sergio Almaguer was named manager of Chiapas.
