Golden Pond, Kentucky

Golden Pond is a ghost town in western Trigg County, Kentucky, United States. The town is located in the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area 11 miles (18 km) west-southwest of Cadiz. Golden Pond was established in the 19th century and became known for its moonshining activity during Prohibition. The settlement was abandoned in 1969 when the land in the recreation area was evacuated.

Etymology

Golden Pond shares its name with a pond located at 36°46′45″N 88°03′48″W / 36.77917°N 88.06333°W / 36.77917; -88.06333, 2.25 miles (3.62 km) west of the town. The most accepted story of the name's origin states that it arose when sunshine on the pond caused it to resemble melted gold. Another story, likely to be legend, states that the community was named for a man who placed gold dust in the vicinity of the pond in an attempt to trigger a gold rush and subsequent property boom. The community was allegedly also named Fungo for the entertainment at the local saloon. This name may have referred to a community further west which later merged with Golden Pond, and may not have been used at all.

Ponda, Goa

Ponda (pronounced /fɔɳɖɛ̃ː/) (Konkani: Fonda, Portuguese: Pondá), also known as Fonda, is a city and a municipal council in the North Goa district of Goa, India. Located in the central area of Goa, Ponda lies 29 kilometres (18 mi) southeast of Panaji, the capital of Goa. The industrial center of the state, Ponda is home to many large factories and industrial estates, and is Goa's fastest-growing city.

History

Ponda formed part of the Novas Conquistas (New Conquests) of Portuguese India. It was ruled by the Sonde Rajas under the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bijapur Sultanate. In the 16th century, due to the absence of the Portuguese, Ponda was a safe haven for Hindus fleeing persecution by Jesuits and the Portuguese. In 1675, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj seized Ponda from the Bijapur Sultanate. It remained part of the Maratha Empire until 1764. Under Shivaji, Saundekar Raja was the vassal of Ponda.

The forests of Ponda were ideal places for Hindus to form makeshift temples with the idols they had salvaged from the broken temples of Sashti. These makeshift temples were slowly renovated as the Hindus gained prosperity. Now, most of the major Hindu temples in Goa are found in Ponda.

Kilogram-force

Kilogram-force is a non-standard unit and does not comply with the SI Metric System.

History

The gram-force and kilogram-force were never well-defined units until the CGPM adopted a standard acceleration of gravity of 980.665 cm/s² for this purpose in 1901, though they had been used in low-precision measurements of force before that time. The kilogram-force has never been a part of the International System of Units (SI), which was introduced in 1960. The SI unit of force is the newton.

Pond (currency)

The pond was a currency unit issued in the Orange Free State and the South African Republic. It was prepared for, but not issued, in New Griqualand.

The word pond is Afrikaans for the word 'pound'. In fact, the South African pound banknotes of the South African Reserve Bank have the word 'Pond' inscribed, as do the banknotes of South West Africa that were issued between the 1930s and 1959.

Kasakela Chimpanzee Community

The Kasakela chimpanzee community is a habituated community of wild eastern chimpanzees that lives in Gombe National Park near Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. The community was the subject of Dr Jane Goodall's pioneering study that began in 1960, and studies have continued ever since. As a result, the community has been instrumental in the study of chimpanzees, and has been popularized in several books and documentaries. The community's popularity was enhanced by Dr Goodall's practice of giving names to the chimpanzees she was observing, in contrast to the typical scientific practice of identifying the subjects by number. Dr Goodall generally used a naming convention in which infants were given names starting with the same letter as their mother, allowing the recognition of matrilineal lines.

Golden (Rosita Vai album)

Golden is the debut album from second-season NZ Idol winner Rosita Vai, released in New Zealand on 1 November 2005.

Chart and single information

Chart

Golden debuted on the official New Zealand albums chart at number 15, but fell to number 25 its second week. In its third week, the album fell to number 33, and then it dropped out of the Top 40 completely. Despite the fact that it received very positive critical reviews, the album spent a mere three weeks on the chart and sold less than 7,000 copies. It therefore failed to reach gold status (7,500 copies sold).

Singles

Rosita's New Zealand Idol winner's song, "All I Ask", was the only single released from the album on 18 October 2005. It debuted at number 1 on the official New Zealand singles chart, a position that it held for two consecutive weeks. The single remained in the top 40 for 9 weeks and was certified double platinum (30,000 copies sold). The album's title track was originally slated to be released as the second single, however this never materialised.

Coming Home (New Found Glory album)

Coming Home is the fifth studio album by American rock band New Found Glory. It was produced by the band along with Thom Panunzio and released on September 19, 2006 through Geffen Records. Written and demoed at the Morning View Mansion in Malibu, California during 2005, Coming Home is a concept album unified by a lyrical theme of being away from home and loved ones. The album marks a departure from the band's earlier work, implementing a more layered and mid-tempo sound that features various piano, keyboard, and string instrumentation more comparable to classic rock than their usual pop punk style.

Coming Home was a critical success for the band, and is widely regarded as one of their best records. The album was particularly noted for its matured style, while the songs were considered the most "mellow" of the band's career. Despite the release of only one single, "It's Not Your Fault", the album was still a relative commercial success, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Rock Albums chart and number nineteen on the Billboard 200.
