Golden Apple Award

The Golden Apple Award was an American award presented to entertainers by the Hollywood Women's Press Club, usually in recognition not of performance but of behavior. The award was presented from 1941 until 2001, when the Hollywood Women's Press Club became inactive. The awards ceremony included Golden Apples to recognize actors for being easy to work with, as well as the Sour Apple Award (not presented in some years) chastising actors for being rude or difficult. Winners of the former include Bob Hope (1941) and Mae West (1969), and winners of the latter include Frank Sinatra (1946, 1951 and 1974), Elvis Presley (1966), and Joan Rivers (1983).

From 1941 to 1966, the Golden Apple winners were specifically called "The Most Cooperative Actor/Actress", while the Sour Apple winners were specifically called "The Least Cooperative Actor/Actress". Starting in 1967, the Golden Apple winners were specifically called "The Male/Female Star of the Year", while the Sour Apple winner was called, simply, "The Sour Apple Winner". From 1974 onwards, there were additional – though sporadic – presentations of Golden Apples for "New Star", "New Discovery", "Daytime Star" and "Hollywood Legend".

Georgia

In Georgia, the Golden Apple is a monthly award presented by American Broadcasting Company affiliate WJBF.

Wichita, Kansas

In Wichita, the Golden Apple Award is given by the ABC station affiliate, KAKE 10. It is given to teachers in the Pre K-12 grade levels.

Florida

In Florida, Golden Apple Awards are presented to responsible teachers within various school districts throughout the state. Golden apple awards are often given to students with good grades, conduct, etc.

Michigan

At the University of Michigan, the Golden Apple is an annual award presented to professors by the Universities' Hillel and Apple Inc. It was first awarded in 1990, and is solely nominated by the student body.

The recipient for 2009 was John U. Bacon. The recipient for 2010 was Christopher Peterson, PH.D. in Clinical and Social Psychology.

Washington

In Washington, the Golden Apple is presented by KCTS, the Seattle PBS network. The award recognizes individuals and programs making a dramatic difference in Washington state education in grades pre-K through 12. The award has been granted since 1992. Previous winners include Dennis Harper and 826 Seattle.

Golden apple

The golden apple is an element that appears in various national and ethnic folk legends or fairy tales. Recurring themes depict a hero (for example Hercules or Făt-Frumos) retrieving the golden apples hidden or stolen by a monstrous antagonist. Alternatively, they are depicted as divine food and the source of immortality in Norse mythology.

Greek mythology

Three instances of golden apples were featured in Greek mythology:

Atalanta

The first case concerns a huntress named Atalanta who raced against a suitor named Melanion. Melanion used golden apples to distract Atalanta so that he could win the race.

Eventually they had a son Parthenopaios, who was one of the Seven against Thebes. Their marriage ended in misfortune when they were transformed into lions (which the Greeks believed were unable to mate with their own species, only with leopards) for offending the gods.

The Garden of the Hesperides

The Garden of the Hesperides, Atlas' daughters, was Hera's orchard in the far western corner of the world, where either a single tree or a grove of trees bearing immortality-giving golden apples grew. Hera placed in the garden a never-sleeping, hundred-headed dragon (named Ladon) as an additional safeguard. The 11th Labor of Hercules was to steal the golden apples from the garden. He stole the apples by asking Atlas to steal the apples and in return he would hold up the sky for him. After Atlas picked the apples Hercules asked Atlas to hold up the sky for him while he made a pad of the lion skin. He never took back his job of holding up the sky and ran away.

Golden Apple (Hangul: 황금사과; RR: Hwangkeum Sakwa) is a South Korean television series starring Park Sol-mi, Kim Ji-hoon, Ji Hyun-woo, Go Eun-ah and Jung Chan. It aired on KBS2 from November 16, 2005 to February 23, 2006 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55 for 30 episodes. The story about four siblings living in a village in the 1960s, and a woman fighting to clear her dead father's name after he is wrongly accused of her stepmother's murder.

Golden Apple received average viewership ratings of 17.43%, making it the 13th highest-rated Korean drama in 2006.

Plot

Kim Chun-dong (Choi Il-hwa) is a widowed farmer with one daughter, Kyung-sook (Lee Young-ah), and two sons, Kyung-gu (Kim Myung-jae) and Kyung-min (Park Ji-bin). Kyung-sook is committed to maintaining the household after the passing of their mother, and the villagers praise her sweet, cheerful nature and hardworking attitude. Everyday chores leave her little time for fun, but she does shed her tough exterior for Park Jong-gyu, the farm owner's son. A student at Seoul National University, Jong-gyu visits on occasion to the delight of Kyung-sook.
