Goethe House

The Goethe House is a writer's house museum in the Innenstadt district of Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The original building was the family residence of the Goethe family, most notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, until 1795. Johann Wolfgang was himself born here in 1749 to his parents, Johann Caspar Goethe, a lawyer, and Katherine Elisabeth Textor, daughter of the mayor (Bürgermeister) of Frankfurt. Johann Wolfgang lived here along with his sister Cornelia until 1765, aged sixteen, when he moved to Leipzig to study law, returning sporadically thereafter. Goethe subsequently wrote about his childhood spent here in his autobiography Aus Meinem Leben: Dichtung und Wahrheit, (Out of my Life: Poetry and Truth), (1811–1833), and describing his birth thus:

Showing a prodigious intellect and talent from an early age, Goethe wrote Götz von Berlichingen (1773) and his first substantially acknowledged novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) here as well as laying the foundations for his celebrated interpretation of Faust. Today, the visitor can see the study with its writing desk as it would have been used by Goethe to pen these early works.

Julia Morgan House

The Julia Morgan House (also known as the Goethe House) is a Mediterranean Revival mansion, located in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Sacramento, California, constructed by Julia Morgan, the first woman licensed to practice architecture in California, and formerly owned by Charles Goethe. Goethe left the home, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to Sacramento State University after his death in 1966.

History

In 1918, Charles Goethe hired Julia Morgan to draw plans for the Goethe House. When Goethe died in 1966 he bequeathed the house along with his library, papers, and a large monetary donation to Sacramento State University. Since then, University Enterprises, Inc. has maintained it.

Recent history

In 1982 the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its historic nature. Part of said historic nature is the fact that it is the only example of Morgan's domestic architecture in the Sacramento area. In 1999, the home was remodeled and its name was formally changed to the Julia Morgan House. A subsequent appraisal in 2004 found in the Sacramento Bee listed the home's value at US$2,000,000. The house had been used by the university to hold events by both the faculty and the students, but due to budget cuts its use had been terminated. As of 2010, there were no plans to hold future events at the house.

Goethe House (Weimar)

The Goethe House (Goethes Wohnhaus) is the main house lived in by the poet Goethe whilst in Weimar, though he did live in several others in the town.
