Plot [link]

Peter Nicholas (Tony LoBianco), a Catholic police detective, investigates a series of murders being committed by various random, seemingly normal assailants, who claim that God told them to kill. Nicholas finds that the murderers have been influenced by a religious cult leader, Bernard Phillips (Richard Lynch) whose origins are a mystery.

Andy Kaufman appears as a possessed policeman who goes on a shooting rampage at the Saint Patrick's Day parade — it was Kaufman's first role in any film, and the same footage was later used for the finale of a documentary called The Passion of Andy Kaufman, in a segment called "Thus Spake Zarathustra", with music by Eumir Deodato. Sylvia Sidney appears as the detective's traumatized mother.

Bernard Herrmann, who had scored Cohen's earlier film It's Alive, was originally assigned to score God Told Me To as well, and Cohen claims on the DVD commentary track that Herrmann saw the first cut of the film immediately after completing the recording sessions for his score to Taxi Driver and made notes on how he believed it could be scored. However, within the next 15 hours, Herrmann died. Cohen then asked composer Miklos Rozsa to score the film. Rozsa turned it down, saying "God told me not to".[1] Frank Cordell composed the score heard in the released version of God Told Me To, and both it and Taxi Driver were dedicated to Herrmann.

The 'alien abduction' sequence, where a naked woman is drawn up into the cavernous interior of an extraterrestrial spacecraft, features (manipulated) generic stock model footage from Gerry Anderson's science fiction TV series Space: 1999.

God Told Me To (song)

"God Told Me To" is the first single from Australian songwriter Paul Kelly's album Stolen Apples.

The song deals with a fictional character called John Johanna, on trial for murder. To explain his actions, John defends himself by saying that God told him to do this. The song continues Paul Kelly's affair with using biblical imagery in his songs.

In an interview Kelly explains

Kelly explains that he borrowed the opening line - "My name is John Johanna" - from American folk antiquity but points out that John is also the name of the author of the Book of Revelation, the apocalyptic last book of the New Testament.

Video

The video for the song was first aired on ABC music video show rage in June 2007. The controversial video was directed by Natasha Pinkus, and is done in a single shot. The camera zooms out slowly from Paul's eye, eventually revealing him to be tied up in a glass case in a pool of blood. Pinkus explains that the blood was Kelly's idea

The video was nominated for a Dendy award at the 2007 Sydney Film Festival and won the 2007 Inside Film Award for 'Best Music Video'.

God Told Me To (album)

God Told Me To is the sixth solo album from guitarist John 5. Released on May 8, 2012

There were three more single releases: Welcome to Violence, Noche Acosador and The Castle.

On September 16, 2011, it was announced the cover for the album would feature a painting of John 5 by Rob Zombie. It was also announced that a DVD would accompany the final album release.

On October 30, 2011, John 5 unveiled the video Welcome to Violence on his website. The video was a montage piece similar to John 5's 2004 video 'God is Closed' which was released to coincide with his first album Vertigo.

On February 23, 2012 John 5 announced that the release date for the album had changed from April 10, 2012 to May 8, 2012.

God Told Me To

by: Paul Kelly

My name is John Johanna, I am misunderstood
Lately, I have been accused of grievous murder in cold blood
My mission is most righteous, my cause is true and just
The wicked need chastisement, you know it's either them or us
God told me to
I did what I had to do
'Cuz God told me to
All around me, empty chatter, the wise men wring their hands
Meanwhile in broad daylight Satan gathers his unholy bands
The mighty strength of angels carries me on my seeking flight
My anger is a hammer, you know not its power or the hour it strikes
God told me to
I answer not to them or you
'Cuz God told me to
Seven golden candles flaming bring forth the Son of Man
In his mouth a two edged sword, seven stars shining in his right hand
The beast has eyes before him, the beast has eyes behind
Those not with me are against me, they're surely gonna feel my holy fire
God told me to
To thine own self be true
And God told me to
God told me to
I'm just doing what I had to do
'Cuz God told me to
