Glengarry

The glengarry bonnet is a traditional Scots cap made of thick-milled woollen material, decorated with a toorie on top, frequently a rosette cockade on the left side, and with ribbons hanging down behind. It is normally worn as part of Scottish military or civilian Highland dress, either formal or informal, as an alternative to the Balmoral bonnet or tam o' shanter. The Royal Regiment of Scotland wears the glengarry with diced band and black cock feathers as its ceremonial headdress.

History

Traditionally, the Glengarry bonnet is said to have first appeared as the head dress of the Glengarry Fencibles when they were formed in 1794 by Alexander Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry, of Clan MacDonell of Glengarry. MacDonell, therefore, is sometimes said to have invented the glengarry but it is not clear whether early pictures of civilians or fencible infantry show a true glengarry, capable of being folded flat, or the standard military bonnet of the period merely 'cocked' into a more 'fore-and-aft' shape. The first use of the classic, military glengarry may not have been until 1841, when it is said to have been introduced for the pipers of the 79th Foot by the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Lauderdale Maule.

Glengarry, Edmonton

Glengarry is a residential neighbourhood located in north east Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Northgate Centre, a major shopping mall, is located in the neighbourhood's north west corner. North Town Mall is located immediately to the north of Glengarry in the neighbourhood of Northmount.

The neighbourhood is bounded on the north by 137 Avenue, on the south by 132 Avenue, on the east by 82 Street and on the west by 97 Street.

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Glengarry had a population of 7003291600000000000♠2,916 living in 7003130100000000000♠1,301 dwellings, a -2.6% change from its 2009 population of 7003299400000000000♠2,994. With a land area of 1.34 km² (0.52 sq mi), it had a population density of 7003217610000000000♠2,176.1 people/km² in 2012.

Residential development

Residential development in Glengarry largely dates from after World War II and was substantially complete by 1985. According to the 2001 federal census, approximately one in seven (15.2%) residences were built between 1946 and 1960. Most of the development was during the 1960s, with seven out of every ten (70.8%) of all residences being constructed between 1961 and 1970. The remaining one in eight (12.6%) of residences were built between 1971 and 1985.

The Scots College is an independent Presbyterian day and boarding school for boys, located in Bellevue Hill, an eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Established in 1893 at Brighton-Le-Sands, Scots has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for approximately 1800 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, including 250 Boarders from Years 5 to 12. Students attend Scots from all regions of the greater metropolitan area and New South Wales country regions. The college is affiliated with the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), the Junior School Heads Association of Australia (JSHAA), the Australian Boarding Schools' Association (ABSA), the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, and is a founding member of the Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of New South Wales (AAGPS).

History

The college was formed in 1893 by three men, the Reverend Dr Archibald Gilchrist, the Reverend William (Fighting Mac) Dill-Macky and the Reverend Arthur Aspinall. Gilchrist devised the school motto of "Utinam Patribus Nostris Digni Simus", which may be translated from Latin as "O that we may be worthy of our forefathers".
