Girl$

Girl$ (Chinese: 囡囡) is a 2010 Hong Kong film directed by Kenneth Bi, it deals with teenagers and young women drawn into compensated dating in Hong Kong. The Chinese term 囡囡 (nānān) is a traditional affectionate term for daughter or young girl, but has also become used as euphemism for a prostitute in Hong Kong.

History

Girl$ premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival on 5 April 2010, before going on general release on 2 September 2010.

Plot

Gucci (Wong Si-Man) is a teenager who seeks to enhance her own self-image through the acquisition of luxury goods, bidding online for a designer handbag that she cannot afford. Looking for a way to make quick money she comes into contact with Icy (Michelle Wai). Just 19 herself, Icy acts as an online procuress, down to a single regular working girl, the hypersexual Lin (Una Lin), she offers to act as an agent for the underage Gucci's virginity, she also convinces Ronnie (Bonnie Xian) to go on compensated dates. Ronnie comes from a wealthy background however she finds herself alone and afraid of forming emotional attachments, wanting to avoid the stigma of being a prostitute, she instead pays the men she goes on dates with. Despite the differences in background the four become friends.

Girl (Eskimo Joe album)

Girl is the debut album by Eskimo Joe, released on 20 August 2001. The album reached number 29 on the Australian (ARIA) Album Charts and went gold. The album was nominated for four ARIA Awards.

The album features the two heavily played Triple J songs "Wake Up" and "Who Sold Her Out", with the latter reaching number 94 on the ARIA Singles Charts. "Sydney Song" featured on an advertisement for Kit Kat, in which a man carried a novelty sized Kit Kat around, to promote the Kit Kat Chunky. This also assisted in sales of the band's album, Girl.

Maya is a 2001 Hindi film directed by Digvijay Singh with Nitya Shetty, Mita Vashisht, Anant Nag and Nikhil Yadav in lead roles.

Plot

12-year-old Maya lives with her aunt Lakshmi, uncle Arun and cousin Sanjay, a typical middle-class family in rural India. The cousins enjoy a playful summer indulging in mischiefs and youthful pranks. But then the young girl has her first period that proves to be a turning point in her life. Maya's family begins making plans for a celebratory feast that involves a ritual rape.

Reception

The Film won international acclaim at the major film festivals it participated in. The music score by the America based duo of Manesh Judge and Noor Lodhi won Critics Mention at the Flanders Film Festival in Belgium. The music also received an award in England and came in third behind John Williams' score for Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Leonardo DiCaprio's Catch me if you Can. The movie was first runners-up in People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, one spot ahead of Mira Nair's well known hit, Monsoon Wedding.

Maya is a 2015 Indian horror film written and directed by Ashwin Saravanan. It features Nayantara and Aari playing the leads. Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli and Amzath khan playing supporting roles. It was dubbed in Telugu as "Mayuri".

Plot

Vasanth (Aari) is an artist who is working on a story about 'Mayavanam', a haunted forest. On his friend's birthday, he tells a story involving 'Maya', a malevolent spirit. He tells him about how one experiences chills and witnesses a spirit descending on them when you say "Maya. your daughter is not with me" three times. In order to ridicule Vasanth, the friend says the same three times, and a similar figure enters the room. Madan falls back in fear, and reveals itself as the friend's wife. The next day, Vasanth shows the pictures taken by him during the dressed up Maya's entry to his boss, Ram Prasad (Amzath Khan) and Madan (Uday Mahesh) , the episode writer on Mayavanam. Ram points out a smoky form near them and warns him of it. He tells him about a book, Asylum by Kate, that details the life of the mentally-ill who were forced into asylums and experimented upon. Madhan then recounts the story of one such inmate, a woman named Maya Matthews, who was taken to the asylum after murdering her husband and forced to give up her new-born daughter to the authorities in the asylum. She falls to her death from the building, with an expensive ring rumored to be on her body, and is buried in the grounds of the asylum (Mayavanam), where it is believed her vengeful spirit now roams. Later, Madhan and Vasanth's friend--an auto driver-- visits Mayavanam to write about his last episode. Madhan disappears, and after escaping from Mayavanam somewhow, Vasanth's friend meet with grisly death soon, by falling off the building just like Maya, which spurs Vasanth to embark on an investigation into Mayavanam.
