Girl$

Girl$ (Chinese: 囡囡) is a 2010 Hong Kong film directed by Kenneth Bi, it deals with teenagers and young women drawn into compensated dating in Hong Kong. The Chinese term 囡囡 (nānān) is a traditional affectionate term for daughter or young girl, but has also become used as euphemism for a prostitute in Hong Kong.

History

Girl$ premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival on 5 April 2010, before going on general release on 2 September 2010.

Plot

Gucci (Wong Si-Man) is a teenager who seeks to enhance her own self-image through the acquisition of luxury goods, bidding online for a designer handbag that she cannot afford. Looking for a way to make quick money she comes into contact with Icy (Michelle Wai). Just 19 herself, Icy acts as an online procuress, down to a single regular working girl, the hypersexual Lin (Una Lin), she offers to act as an agent for the underage Gucci's virginity, she also convinces Ronnie (Bonnie Xian) to go on compensated dates. Ronnie comes from a wealthy background however she finds herself alone and afraid of forming emotional attachments, wanting to avoid the stigma of being a prostitute, she instead pays the men she goes on dates with. Despite the differences in background the four become friends.

Girl (Eskimo Joe album)

Girl is the debut album by Eskimo Joe, released on 20 August 2001. The album reached number 29 on the Australian (ARIA) Album Charts and went gold. The album was nominated for four ARIA Awards.

The album features the two heavily played Triple J songs "Wake Up" and "Who Sold Her Out", with the latter reaching number 94 on the ARIA Singles Charts. "Sydney Song" featured on an advertisement for Kit Kat, in which a man carried a novelty sized Kit Kat around, to promote the Kit Kat Chunky. This also assisted in sales of the band's album, Girl.

Kim (novel)

Kim is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author Rudyard Kipling. It was first published serially in McClure's Magazine from December 1900 to October 1901 as well as in Cassell's Magazine from January to November 1901, and first published in book form by Macmillan & Co. Ltd in October 1901. The story unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881, but before the Third, probably in the period 1893 to 1898.

The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India, its teeming populations, religions, and superstitions, and the life of the bazaars and the road."

In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Kim No. 78 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel."

Kim people

The Kim are a people of Chad, who mainly inhabit four villages in the Mayo-Kebbi Est region. The 1993 RGPH census reported a total population of 15,354 in Chad.

Principal economic activities include cultivation of finger millet, taro, and rice, fishing, and pottery.

Kim (given name)

Kim is a male or female given name. It is also used as a diminutive or nickname for names such as Kimberly, Kimberley, Kimball, Kimiko, or Joakim.

A notable use of the name was the fictional street urchin Kimball O'Hara in Rudyard Kipling's book Kim. From the early 1900s till the 1960s the name Kim was used in English-speaking countries mostly for boys because of the popularity of this book. Another use of the name in literature is in the opening of Edna Ferber's 1926 novel Show Boat. Magnolia, the female protagonist, names her baby daughter Kim because she was born at the moment when the Cotton Blossom show boat was at the convergence on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers where the states of Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri join giving the acronym KIM. In the 1936 film version of the musical Show Boat, Magnolia's father claims to have invented the name based on the same acronym. Magnolia's mother comments, "Kim, that ain't no name." Despite the popularity of the novel and musical, girls were seldom given the name until the 1960s, but it has since become more common for them than for males.
