Ginzan Onsen (銀山温泉) is an onsen (hot spring) area in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its name means "silver mountain". It became nationally famous as the setting for the television drama Oshin.
Fossils from the Miocene era have been found in the vicinity.
But not every pool of heated water qualifies as an onsen ... Ginzan Onsen, located in the Yamagata region about 260 miles north of Tokyo, now limits entry to day trippers during winter peak season to minimize their impact on local residents.
