Gillespie Field

Gillespie Field (IATA: SEE, ICAO: KSEE, FAA LID: SEE) is a county-owned public airport 10 miles (16 km) northeast of downtown San Diego, in El Cajon, San Diego County, California.

History

In 1942 the United States Marine Corps chose a 688-acre (2.78 km²) site east of San Diego for parachute training for the newly forming Parachute battalions. In September 1942 Camp Gillespie was completed and named in honor of Lieutenant Archibald H. Gillespie, a Marine officer who played a prominent role in the effort to separate California from Mexico in the 1840s. Three 256 foot high towers were built from which the paratroopers practiced their jumps.

In February 1944, the camp was commissioned as Marine Corps Auxiliary Airfield Gillespie under the command of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. MCAAF Gillespie soon became responsible for Camp Pendleton Outlying Air Field. Among the units that transited and trained at MCCAF Gillespie were VMSB-141, Air Warning Squadron 10 and the Navy's VT-37.

Gillespie Field (San Diego Trolley station)

Gillespie Field is a San Diego Trolley station located across Marshall Avenue from Gillespie Field airport which is served by the Green Line. The next station north is Santee Town Center, which is the Green Line's terminus, and the next station south is Arnele Avenue.

Prior to July 2005, all Orange Line trolleys used to continue through this station to Santee Town Center. With the opening of the new Green Line, this service was replaced, and Orange Line trolleys used to terminate at this station. This was due to the path between Gillespie Field and Santee Town Center being single tracked, and having two lines running on that route would cause operational issues. Orange Line service was further truncated to El Cajon Transit Center on September 2, 2012 as part of a system redesign due to low ridership between the two stations, so only the Green Line now serves this station.

Gillespie Field (FAA LID: 66B) is a public use airport located one nautical mile (2 km) west of the central business district of Meddybemps, a town in Washington County, Maine, United States.

Facilities and aircraft

Gillespie Field covers an area of 60 acres (24 ha) at an elevation of 200 feet (61 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 16/34 with a turf surface measuring 1,635 by 50 feet (498 x 15 m). For the 12-month period ending August 19, 2010, the airport had 700 general aviation aircraft operations, an average of 58 per month.
