  • Dark ride

A dark ride or ghost train is an indoor amusement ride on which riders in guided vehicles travel through specially lit scenes that typically contain animation, sound, music, and special effects.

Dark rides do not necessarily lack illumination; Disney's "It's a Small World" is an example of a brightly lit dark ride. Rather, all dark rides are enclosed in order to remove the variable of non-artificial illumination from the ride experience; moreover, most dark rides use both emphatic lighting and the contrast of darkness for dramatic effect. Selective use of darkness further helps hide ride mechanisms that would otherwise be exposed.

    History

The first dark rides appeared in the late 19th century and were called "scenic railways" and "pleasure railways". A popular type of dark ride, commonly referred to as an old mill or tunnel of love, used small boats to carry riders through water-filled canals. A Trip to the Moon began operation at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. Leon Cassidy of the Pretzel Amusement Ride Company patented the first single-rail electric dark ride in 1928. Historically notable dark rides include Futurama at the 1939 New York World's Fair and Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland.

    1979 Sydney Ghost Train fire

The Sydney Ghost Train fire was a fire on the night of 9 June 1979 at Luna Park Sydney. The fire destroyed the amusement park's ghost train, and killed six children and one adult. Inadequate fire-fighting measures and low staffing caused the fire to completely destroy the ride, which was first constructed in 1931, and had been transported from Glenelg, South Australia to Milsons Point, New South Wales during 1934 and 1935.

Although electrical faults and arson by unknown figures have been claimed, the exact cause of the fire could not be determined by a coronial inquiry. The coroner also ruled that, while the actions of Luna Park's management and staff before and during the fire (in particular their choosing not to follow advice on the installation of a sprinkler system in the ride) breached their duty of care, charges of criminal negligence should not be laid. The case was reopened in 1987: no new findings were made, although the police investigation and coronial inquiry were criticised. The fire forced the closure of Luna Park until 1982, when it reopened under a new name and new owners.

    Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are an American professional baseball franchise based in Atlanta since 1966, after having originated and played for many decades in Boston and then having subsequently played in Milwaukee for a little more than a decade. The team is a member of the East division of the National League (NL) in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Braves have played home games at Turner Field since 1997, and play spring training games in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. In 2017, the team is to move to SunTrust Park, a new stadium complex in the Cumberland district of Cobb County just north of the I-285 bypass.

The "Braves" name, which was first used in 1912, originates from a term for an Indian warrior. They are nicknamed "the Bravos", and often referred to as "America's Team" in reference to the team's games being broadcast on the nationally available TBS from the 1970s until 2007, giving the team a nationwide fan base.

From 1991 to 2005 the Braves were one of the most successful franchises in baseball, winning division titles an unprecedented 14 consecutive times in that period (omitting the strike-shortened 1994 season in which there were no official division champions). The Braves won the NL West 1991–93 and the NL East 1995–2005, and they returned to the playoffs as the National League Wild Card in 2010. The Braves advanced to the World Series five times in the 1990s, winning the title in 1995. Since their debut in the National League in 1876, the franchise has won 16 divisional titles, 17 National League pennants, and three World Series championships—in 1914 as the Boston Braves, in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves, and in 1995 in Atlanta. The Braves are the only Major League Baseball franchise to have won the World Series in three different home cities.

    Train The

    by: Frank Sinatra

And now the sun has broken through
It looks like it will stay
Just can't have you comin' home
    On such a rainy day
    The train is leaving Ellensville
    Unless my watch is fast
The kids are comin' home from school
    Must be quarter past
So many changes since you've been away
And there's so many things to say
This time around you'll want to stay
'Cuz I've had so many nights to find the way
Even bought that summer cottage yesterday
Pretty soon I'll be close to you
And it will be so good
We'll talk about the part of you
    I never understood
And I will take good care of you
    And never let you cry
We will look so much in love
    To people passing by
So many changes since you've been away
And there's so many things to say
I wrote so many times and more
But the letters still are lying in my drawer
'Cuz the morning mail had left some time before
All the passengers for Allentown wait closer to the track
It's hard for me to realize you're really coming back
The crossing gate is coming down I think I see the train
The sun has gone and now my face is wet with heavy rain
The passengers for Allentown are gone
The train is slowly moving on
But I can't see you anyplace
And I know for sure I'd recognize your face
And I know for sure I'd recognize your face.
