Ghost (game)

Ghost is a written or spoken word game in which players take turns adding letters to a growing word fragment, trying not to be the one to complete a valid word. Each fragment must be the beginning of an actual word, and usually some minimum is set on the length of a word that counts, such as three or four letters. The player who completes a word loses the round and earns a "letter" (as in the basketball game horse), with players being eliminated when they have been given all five letters of the word "ghost".

Ghost can be played by two or more players of any age and requires no equipment, although it can be played with pencil and paper instead of being spoken aloud.

Game play

A player is chosen at random to start the game, and begins by naming any letter of the alphabet. Players then take turns to add letters to this fragment, with the aim being to avoid completing an actual word. The player whose turn it is may - instead of adding a letter - challenge the previous player to prove that the current fragment is actually the beginning of a word. If the challenged player can name such a word, the challenger loses the round; otherwise the challenged player loses the round. If a player bluffs, or completes a word without other players noticing, then play continues. When a round ends, play generally passes to the left.

Plot

It should be a relaxing weekend in a remote cabin in the woods, as far away from big city bustle and the usual routine. But for the group of young people who wanted to meet here for camping, there is different. When they find a mysterious game and play it despite every warning, they unknowingly invoke three hideous ghosts; witches who only have one thing in mind: the death of the group. Only when it is possible to solve the various mysteries in time, can they hope to escape the clutches of the evil they have awoken and, for the parties, it's a merciless race of death against life.

Ghost Game (novel)

Ghost Game is a novel by British author Nigel Hinton which was first published in 2011. It is part of Heinemann's Heroes series which is designed to appeal to reluctant readers in the schools market. It follows the story of a father and son who start a new life in a new town after the loss of the mother and younger son of the family but Danny believed that their temporary house was haunted by a boss from his late brother's favourite video game. A non fiction section by Christopher Lee about ghosts follows the story.

Concept

When the author was approached by Pearson PLC to contribute to the Heroes series he thought about the violent books on the market and wanted to write something powerful and dramatic. It is also inspired by Hinton's nephew Joey Lager, to whom the novel is dedicated, playing video games.
