Ghatal

Ghatal is headquarters of Ghatal subdivision in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, India. It also has a community development block. Ghatal is flood-prone area and in many years is flooded by the Rupnarayan River. This town is old one. The river Shilabati divided the town into two parts. The Ghatal Police station is lying at the west bank of the river. There is one peculiar floating bridge on the river made of by joining some boats tied with rope from the both sides in the banks, called "Bhasa Pool" (Floating bridge). Also one cement bridge is constructed on the main pitch road passing through Chandrakona Town, Ghatal, Daspur and Mechhogram.

History

Ghatal Sub-Division and the town Ghatal have their old history of civilization, business, struggle for freedom of India, Many Patriots, Social reformers, freedom fighters were the sons of this PS area. The river Darakeswar and Shilabati meet with rivers Jhumi and Damodar at a place named as Bandar (Port) 3 km (2 mi) East from Ghatal PS.This is the Subdivision of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Patriot Pradyot Bhattacharya, Patriot Pravangsu Paul, Patriot Mohini Mondal, Raja Narendralal Khan, Patriot Manabendranath Roy and so many ever-memorable persons.

Ghatal (community development block) is an administrative division in Ghatal subdivision of Paschim Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Ghatal police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Ghatal.

Ghatal is located at 22°40′00″N 87°43′00″E / 22.666667°N 87.716667°E / 22.666667; 87.716667.

Ghatal community development block has an area of 229.91  km².

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Ghatal block had a total population of 190,705, out of which 96,605 were males and 94,100 were females. Ghatal block registered a population growth of 11.83 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for the combined Midnapore district was 14.87 per cent. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.45 per cent.

Ghatal (Vidhan Sabha constituency) is an assembly constituency in Paschim Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is reserved for scheduled castes.

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 231. Ghatal (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (SC) is composed of the following: Ghatal municipality, Ghatal community development block, Ghatal Kharar municipality, and Rajnagar, Sarberia I and Sarberia II gram panchayats of Daspur I community development block.

Ghatal (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (SC) is part of No. 32 Ghatal (Lok Sabha constituency). It was earlier part of Arambagh (Lok Sabha constituency).

1977-2006

In 2006, 2001, 1996, 1991 and 1986 state assembly elections, Ratan Pakhira of CPI(M) won the 197 Ghatal (SC) assembly seat defeating his nearest rivals, Ayan Dolui of BJP in 2006, Gopal Karak of Trinamool Congress in 2001, Rajani Kanta Dolui of Congress in 1996, Nimai Bag of Congress in 1991, and Madhu Sudan Dolai in 1987. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Gopal Mandal of CPI(M) defeated Nimai Bag of Congress in 1982. Gopal Mandal of CPI(M) defeated Baneshwar Saha of Janata Party.
