George Shenton

Sir George Shenton (4 March 1842 – 29 June 1909) was a prominent businessman in colonial Western Australia, the first Mayor of Perth, and a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for over thirty years.

Early and family life

George Shenton was born in Perth, Western Australia on 4 March 1842, the eldest son of George Shenton Sr, a wealthy businessman who was Perth's first pharmacist. George Shenton Jnr was educated locally until 1855, when at the age of 13 he was sent to England to complete his education at the Wesleyan Collegiate Institute (Queen's College) in Taunton. In 1858 he returned to Perth, where he received experience working in a range of his father's businesses, including running his father's store in Geraldton, and managing the family's farm on the Greenough River.

On 4 November 1868, Shenton married Julia Theresa Eichbaum in a ceremony at Fremantle. They would have one son and nine daughters before her death in June 1887. To his great disappointment, his only son died in infancy.

1896–97 Southampton St. Mary's F.C. season

The 1896–97 season was the twelfth since the foundation of Southampton St. Mary's F.C. and their third in league football, as members of the Southern League. The season was the most successful yet, with St. Mary's claiming the Southern League title for the first time and reaching the Second Round Proper of the FA Cup. It was the start of the most successful period in the club's history — in a period of eight years, they were Southern League champions six times and reached the final of the FA Cup twice.

Pre-season

Following the closure of the Antelope Ground in April 1896, St. Mary's were forced to look for a new home. Thanks to the connections of their president Dr. H. W. R. Bencraft, who was also Hon. Secretary to Hampshire County Cricket Club, the club secured the use of The County Ground, at an annual rental of £200.

As St. Mary's were unrestricted by the maximum wages rule of the Football League they were able to "poach" players from League clubs by offering them higher pay. During the close-season, the Saints' committee signed several players who were keen to earn more money in the Southern League. Amongst the recruits were Robert Buchanan from Woolwich Arsenal and Harry Haynes from Small Heath, but the most significant signing was goalkeeper George Clawley who was signed from Stoke and began a long and illustrious career with the Saints.

George Shenton (footballer)

George "Shino" Shenton (15 June 1899 – 10 February 1978) was an English footballer who played at right-back for Port Vale from 1927 to 1936. Featuring in 196 league and cup games, he helped the "Valiants" to win the Third Division North title in 1929–30.

Playing career

Shenton played for Naybro Stone, Downing's Tileries and Blythe Bridge, before joining Port Vale as an amateur in June 1927. He signed professional forms with the "Valiants" in August that year, and made his debut on 10 November in a 3–1 defeat to Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. He played a total of ten Second Division games in the 1928–29 season, as Vale suffered relegation. He played 35 games of the 1929–30 Third Division North title winning campaign, playing opposite of Jimmy Oakes. He went on to feature 42 times in the 1930–31 season, as the side posted a club record finish of fifth in the Second Division. He played 41 games in the 1931–32 season, and recovered from a twisted knee to post 29 appearances in the 1932–33 campaign. Shenton then lost his first team place, and featured just ten times in the 1933–34 season, 15 times in the 1934–35 season, and 14 times in the 1935–36 campaign. He was released from The Old Recreation Ground in the summer, and later played for Shelton Iron and Steel. His benefit match was held against rivals Stoke on 30 September 1935; Vale lost the game 6–2.

Shenton

Shenton is a hamlet in Leicestershire.

It is the southern terminus of the Battlefield Line Railway, which runs to Shenton from Shackerstone. The station is located at the foot of Ambion Hill and is actually the reconstructed Humberstone Road Station from Leicester. The original station was demolished in the 1940s, except for a small lamp room that now serves as the Station Pottery.

Admiral Sir Alexander Dundas Young Arbuthnott is buried in the graveyard.

It is a short drive from the M1 motorway. It is close to the site of the Battle of Bosworth, which took place south of Market Bosworth.
