George Osborne

George Osborne (born Gideon Oliver Osborne; 23 May 1971) is a British Conservative Party politician who has been Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2010 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton since 2001.

Osborne worked for The Daily Telegraph before joining the Conservative Research Department and becoming head of its political section. He was a special adviser to Douglas Hogg at the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and worked at 10 Downing Street as well as for Prime Minister John Major's campaign team in the party's unsuccessful 1997 general election campaign before becoming a speechwriter and political secretary to Major's successor as party leader, William Hague.

In 2001, Osborne was elected as MP for Tatton, becoming the youngest Conservative MP in the House of Commons. He was appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Conservative leader Michael Howard in 2004. In 2005, he ran David Cameron's successful leadership campaign. Cameron appointed Osborne Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and, after the 2010 general election, Chancellor in the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government.

George Alexander Osborne

George Alexander Osborne (24 September 1806 - 16 November 1893) was an Irish composer and pianist.

Biography

Osborne was born in Limerick. He left Ireland at the age of eighteen, when he left for Brussels, where he was appointed music instructor for the eldest son of the Dutch king, William of Orange, and became friends with Charles de Bériot. With de Bériot he was later to compose more than 30 duos for violin and piano, which enjoyed great popularity. In 1830 he fought for the royalists in the Belgian revolution, and after his capture and release he moved to Paris. Here he studied under Johann Peter Pixis, François-Joseph Fétis and Friedrich Kalkbrenner and became friendly with some of the leading musicians of his time including Berlioz and Chopin. In 1843, Osborne settled permanently in London, although he maintained a home in Paris until c.1848, when he encouraged a nervous Chopin during the latter's tour of England in 1848.). In London he held directorships of the Philharmonic Society, the Royal Academy of Music, and conducted the Amateur Musical Society (from 1852). Osborne died at his home in Regent's Park, London, at the age of 87.

George Osborne (cricketer)

George Osborne was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1879 and 1883.

Osborne played cricket at club level for Chesterfield and made his debut first-class appearance in a Gentlemen v. Players match in 1877, on the winning Players side. He joined Derbyshire in the 1879 season and played for the Derbyshire Colts in June. Shortly after, he made his first class debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire. Osborne made 9 not out in the second innings and played three further matches during the season, picking up his career high score of 14 against Yorkshire. In the 1881 season he appeared in two games which were against Marylebone Cricket Club and Lancashire. In the 1883 season he played one game against Lancashire with an indifferent performance.

Osborne played 15 innings in 8 first class matches with an average of 4.28 and a top score of 14. He took 1 wicket at an average of 39.00.

At the time of the 1881 census, the only individual of this name living near Chesterfield was a colliery banksman aged 26 born in Shelsfield Kent. He was living with a wife and son at Clowne.
