Geoff Miller

Geoffrey Miller, OBE (born 8 September 1952) is an English former cricketer, who played in thirty four Tests and twenty five ODIs for England from 1976 to 1984. He played for Derbyshire from 1973 to 1986, captaining the side from 1979 to 1981 (following the sudden resignation of David Steele after six weeks in the role), and returned in 1990 after playing for Essex between 1987 and 1989. He was an England selector from 2008 to 2013 and was appointed President of Derbyshire C.C.C. in March 2014.

The cricket writer, Colin Bateman, noted, "Geoff Miller concedes that he probably enjoyed cricket too much. He did not take it as seriously as some, And when it became a rigorous, grim-faced business, he was not sorry to bow out of an eight-year Test career that never reached the peaks many expected". Likewise Simon Hughes referred to Miller in 1990 as being "the only remaining player who unfailingly visited the opposing team's dressing room after play to thank them for the game ... [and] the last man to field at slip with a whoopee cushion up his jumper"

Geoff Miller (priest)

Geoffrey Vincent Miller (born 26 January 1956) is a British Church of England priest and former school teacher. He has been the Archdeacon of Northumberland since 2005.

Early life and education

Miller was born on 26 January 1956 in Manchester, England, to Harold and Vera Miller. He was educated at Sharston High School, a state school in Sharston, Manchester. He studied at the University of Durham, graduating with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree in 1987. He then worked as a teacher until he began training for ordained ministry.

Ordained ministry

In 1981, Miller entered St John's College, Nottingham, an Anglican theological college to trained for ordained ministry. There, he completed a Diploma in Pastoral Studies (DPS) in 1983. He was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in 1983 and as a priest in 1984.

After a curacy in Jarrow he was Team Vicar at St Aidan and St Luke, Billingham from 1986 to 1992; Urban Development Officer for the Diocese of Durham from 1991 to 1996; Vicar of St Cuthbert, Darlington from 1996 to 1999; and a Residentiary Canon at St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne from 1995 until his Archdeacon's appointment.

Geoff Miller (public servant)

Geoffrey Lee "Geoff" Miller AO (26 January 1942 – 10 October 2014) was a senior Australian public servant.

Life and career

Geoff Miller was born in Grafton, New South Wales on 26 January 1942. For high school, he attended Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth, New South Wales. His university studies were at the University of New England where he completed a degree in agricultural economics with first class honours.

He began his career in a state agricultural department, before shifting to work for CSR Limited.

In 1986, Miller was appointed Secretary of the Department of Primary Industry. In July 1987 he became Associate Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, but was again appointed as a Secretary in 1988, this time of the Department of Primary Industries and Energy. During the period December 1991 to June 1993, Miller was concurrently Secretary to the Department of Primary Industries and Energy and the Department of Tourism.

As an associate secretary of the Department of Primary Industries and Energy, Miller bid for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation. He was defeated in a ballot for the position by 90 votes. The Australian Government spent more than $500,000 on the unsuccessful campaign to have Miller appointed to the position. Miller retired from the public service in February 1994.

Geoff Miller (diplomat)

Walter Geoffrey Thomas "Geoff" Miller AO is a former senior Australian public servant and diplomat, best known for heading the Office of National Assessments between 1989 and 1995.

Life and career

Miller was the Tasmanian Rhodes scholar in 1956, and went on to graduate from the University of Oxford.

In 1989 Miller was appointed head of the Australian Government's intelligence assessment agency, the Office of National Assessments. His tenure at the office, between 1989 and 1995, coincided with the first Gulf War, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars; and he oversaw intelligence assessment analysts working on developments in these regions as well developments relating to Australia's commitment to United Nations peacekeeping.

In 1995, Miller was appointed Australian High Commissioner to New Zealand, to commence in January 1996.

Miller retired from his diplomatic and Australian Public Service career in 2000.

Awards

In January 1993, Miller was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for public service and service to international relations.
