Gate Theatre

The Gate Theatre, in Dublin, was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál Mac Liammóir, initially using the Abbey Theatre's Peacock studio theatre space to stage important works by European and American dramatists. The theatre later moved to 1 Cavendish Row (part of the Rotunda Hospital complex) where leading Irish architect Michael Scott undertook the revisions necessary to the room to convert it into a theatre. Today the Theatre has a capacity of 371 people. The theatre's current artistic director is Michael Colgan.

Edwards/McLiammoir Productions presented European plays in sharp contrast to the country kitchen fare available at the Abbey Theatre bringing the Irish Premieres of Ibsen and other such dramatists to the Irish public. This mission statement is still in effect today.

Orson Welles, James Mason and Michael Gambon started their acting careers at The Gate. In December 1983 the directorship of the Gate was handed to Michael Colgan. The Gate Theatre is the only theatre in the world to have existed with only two artistic directors.

Gate Theatre (New York City)

The Gate Theatre was an Off-Broadway theatre in New York City that was active during the 1950s through 1970s. Located at 162 Second Avenue in the East Village, the theatre was founded in 1957 by Lily Turner. It closed in the early 1970s.

History

Originally a studio near Covent Garden, the Gate Theatre was opened in 1925 and quickly established a reputation for presenting British premieres of foreign classics and contemporary work, including plays by August Strindberg, Eugene O'Neill and later John Steinbeck and Jean Cocteau. With actors such as Robert Morley, Flora Robson and Cyril Cusack, the Gate was an important fixture in British Theatre, until it was destroyed by bombing in the Blitz in March 1941.

The Gate was re-established in 1979 at its current premises in Notting Hill. The smallest “off-West End” theatre in London, the Gate produces work in-house in its 75 seat, transformable space.

The Gate has won numerous awards for its work including Olivier, Critic’s Circle, Peter Brook, Fringe First, LWT and Time Out awards. Its work has been nominated for Off West End, Stage, Evening Standard, Carol Tambor, Amnesty International, and South Bank awards.

Some of the actors and practitioners to have worked at the Gate include Stephen Daldry, Jude Law, Kelly Hunter, Rachel Weisz, Alex Kingston, Kathy Burke, Sam Shepherd, Sir Peter Hall, Sarah Kane, Katie Mitchell, Nancy Meckler, Mick Gordon, Tobias Menzies, and Ian Rickson.
